Cormier offers up interim title fight with Gustafsson if rematch with Jon Jones falls through

What happens if Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson 2 doesn't happen? Daniel Cormier has an idea.

Andrew Richardson-USA TODAY Spor

As it stands, Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson II is dependent on Jones signing the bout agreements for UFC 177 on August 30th. However, Jones hasn't agreed to the fight (much to Dana White's displeasure), and it doesn't appear like he'll do so until he and the UFC can come to terms on a new contract. Waiting in line for the winner of this fight is the unbeaten Daniel Cormier, fresh off a dismantling of Dan Henderson, has got his own idea for the UFC in case Jones doesn't ink a new deal. "I know this will probably be unpopular, but if [Jones] won't sign, whether it be for money or a lack of wanting to fight the kid, I'll fight Alexander Gustafsson," Daniel Cormier told SportsWorldNews.com. "But it should be for the interim title."

Well I see nothing wrong with this proposal, as unlikely as it is that Jones leaves the UFC to go elsewhere. Cormier has already been somewhat discouraged by Dana White to wait on the Jones-Gustafsson winner, essentially implying that he could/should take one more fight, but if anything happens to Jones that either makes him relinquish his belt or render him unable to defend it in the long-term, this makes perfect sense.

But for now, this is all speculation, and nothing will kick into action until Jones makes a move.
