MMA Tete-A-Tete: Are Bellator's new contracts too sticky?

Last week John Nash broke the story about Bellator's new, even more restrictive contracts. I wanted to follow up and find out more about them and what it means for the MMA business and competitive landscape I invited John and Brian D'Souza author of author of Pound for Pound: The Modern Gladiators of Mixed Martial Arts -- the book I declared the best-ever account of the business side of MMA -- to join me for an MMA Tete-A-Tete.

Topics covered include:

  • Seemingly endless contract extensions for Bellator fighters, triggered by things like winning a tournament, winning a title, etc
  • Talent like the Diaz brothers and Ben Askren either sitting on the shelf or in self-imposed exile from American MMA because of the poor marketplace conditions.
  • The possibility of fighters organizing and forming a fighters union or fighters association.
