In the UFC 172 co-main event, former 170 lber Anthony Johnson returned to the UFC in a Light Heavyweight fight against contendership hopeful Phil Davis. From the opening round, Johnson showed that he was the superior fighter. He never let Davis score a takedown then outworked his opponent on the feet to score a unanimous decision victory.

The two wrestlers exchanged at range to begin the first round. Surprisingly, it was "Rumble" who got the advantage in the striking match. Midway through the round he hurt his opponent, but Johnson was able to hurt his opponent. Davis was able to recover and return to his feet. He stayed on the outside, but still received punishment before the end of the round.

Rumble kept Davis on the defensive through the second round. His hands were quicker and he easily fended off any takedown attempts. Davis tried to mix it up with superman punches and kicks, but it didn't seem to phase Johnson. He landed an uppercut then continued top pursue.

Davis could not find a home for his punches in the third round either. Johnson was able to slip most of them and circle out when he was pressed against the fence. Johnson couldn't find an opportunity to finish the fight, but hurt Davis late in the round.

Anthony Johnson scores the unanimous decision (30-27 x 3) over Phil Davis
