Here are some of the better prospects in action this weekend. Five prospects that I had ranked in my top 10 list for each division are in action this weekend. Also, two of the best Female 135lbs fighters outside of the UFC are in action, and some other very good prospects that could end up in bigger shows very soon.
M-1 - 4 Apr - Orenburg, Russia
Marcin Tybura (9-0) vs. Maro Perak (23-3-1)
Tybura is currently my #1 HW prospect in the sport. He has stopped 8 of 9 opponents in his career, including his last three in M-1. Marcin is an outstanding grappler, who can control position to work submission and also put ground and pound on his opponents in volume.
Marat Gafurov (8-0) vs. Lee Morrison (13-3)
Gafurov is the current M-1 Featherweight Champ, and holds a win over UFC fighter Mairbek Taisumov. He has a strong BJJ base winning the Russian ADCC competition. His martial arts game has elements of Wushu-Sanda, BJJ, and then Sambo which he picked up later than some of his fellow native Dagestan fighters.
Ramazan Emeev (11-2) vs. Andrei Semenov (34-9-2)
Emeev is the M-1 Middleweight champion. He has a solid combat Sambo base , and some real power in his hands. He was originally scheduled to fight Bellator vet Vyacheslav Vasilevsky in this fight, before his opponents were changed. Emeev is not a large MW, and if he were to get picked up by UFC, or Bellator he looks like he could potentially make the cut to Welterweight. Patrick Wyman had him in his Searching for Future Champions series, and I had him as my 2nd best MW prospect.
Legacy FC - 4 Apr - Albuquerque, NM
Holly Holm (6-0) vs. Juliana Werner (7-3)
If you believe that Dana White and UFC are not very interested in Holm, then you're just nuts. UFC will be watching this fight very closely, and Holly is likely out to make a statement with another big KO win.
Nick Urso (7-1) vs. Ray Borg (5-0)
Age: 28 Age: 20
Height: 5'6 Height: 5'4
Two of the best FLWs in the Southwest meet in the city where they train, and the winner will likely be very close to a UFC contract. Urso has a kickboxing base and trains at Jackson-Winklejohns. He has won six straight heading into this one. Borg has three subs, and a KO in his five fights.
Usman was a DII wrestling champion for Nebraska-Kerney, now training with the Blackzillions. He has very good physical tools to complement his wrestling base. I expect him to move rapidly through the regional ranks.
Inoki Genome Federation - 5 Apr - 2014
Satoshi Ishii (11-2-1) vs. Philip de Fries (10-3)
The 2008 Olympic Judo gold medalist has now won seven straight competing almost exclusively in his native Japan, but against numerous UFC/PRIDE veterans. I suspect that Ishii is making more fighting for IGF in Japan than UFC or even some rumored interest from WSOF is offering him.
The #1 HW Prospect on the 2011 BE scouting report will return to action for the 1st time since his back to back losses to Kenny Garner in 2012. I've heard a rumor that he fought in Russia at some point since then, but I can't find any result for it, so it might have been an erroneous report.
BAMMA - 5 Apr - London, England
Tom Duquesnoy (8-1) vs. Teddy Violet (8-0)
Age: 20 Age:
Height: 5'7 Height:
A couple of French prospect lock up for the BAMMA FW Title. Duquesnoy has a wrestling and boxing background that he is blending together to become one of the better FW prospects out there. Violet despite having the unblemished record is less heralded, but is a dangerous fighter with five submissions on his record.
Duquesnoy vs. Hunt Fight starts at 5:20, ends at 5:55
Ryan Scope (8-0) vs. Ali Arish (20-2)
Age: 22 Age: 38
Height: 5'10 Height: 5'8
Scope is a very well rounded fighter, who could be very close to fighting for a bigger organization. He has seen two big fights with fellow stud Welterweight prospect Walter Gahadza fall through in the last year, but has continued to win. Arish has won 9 straight, including some quality wins over solid regional competition in England.
IRFA - 5 Apr - Solna, Sweden
Oskar Piechota (3-0-1) vs. Sadibou Sy (1-0)
Striker vs. Grappler match-up. Piechota competed at the 2013 ADCC world championships, while Sy was an ISKA amateur kickboxing World Champion, and WKN Professional Kickboxing European Champion.
Jungle Fight - 5 Apr - Sao Paulo, Brazil
Larissa Pacheco (9-0) vs. Lizianne Silveira (2-0)
Age: 19 Age:
Height: 5'7 Height: 5'9
Pacheco could very well be the next female signed by the UFC. At 19 years old she has been tearing through her opposition, winning all of her fights by stoppage. Last time out she won the Jungle Fights BW title, and this will be her first defense.
Pro FC - 6 Apr - Rostov-on-don, Russia
Max Nunes (12-1) vs. Boris Miroshnichenko (11-6)
Nunes will compete at MW for the 2nd time since making the drop from LHW. He did not have much of a martial arts base when he started training in MMA, but his natural athletic ability has helped him develop some very good skills. Patrick Wyman had him covered in his Searching for Future Champions series, and I have him as the 3rd best MW prospect in MMA.
Review from last week:
EFC Africa - 27 Mar - Johannesburg, South Africa
Garreth McLellan (11-2) defended his EFC-A MW title with a 1st round RNC over JP Kruger (5-2).
Fight Nights - 28 Mar - Moscow, Russia
Konstantin Erokhin (6-1) picked up a UD victory over Brett Rogers (14-7) extending his winning streak to 6.
Mikhail Mokhnatkin (4-1) vs Kilichbek Sarkarboev (3-1) was cancelled for unknown reasons.
Cage Warriors FC - 28 Mar - Amman, Jordan
Abu Azaitar (9-2) needed only 34 seconds to TKO Jack Marshman (14-5) and improve his winning streak to four fights.
Marcin Lasota (8-0) submitted Paul Marin (7-4) via armbar in the 1st round, don't be surprised if he ends up in the UFC very soon.
Unified MMA - 28 Mar - Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Tanner Boser (5-0) submitted Nick Campbell (5-5) in the 2nd round of their bout.
Jungle Fight - 29 Mar - Foz do Igacu, Parana, Brazil
Mario Israel (9-1) dropped a controversial split decision to Jonas Bilharinho (5-0-1). I haven't seen the fight, but some of the reports I saw ranged from Israel got straight up robbed, to it was close but leaning towards Israel. A rematch has already been scheduled for July 19th.
MMA Super Heroes - 30 Mar - Sao Paulo, Brazil
Thomas de Almeida (16-0) went farther than he ever has in a fight against Vinicius Zani (7-4), but the result remained the same, a TKO finish. Almedia has now stopped 16 of 16 opponents, 14 in the 1st round. He is another fighter I would expect to see in the UFC soon.
Kalindra Faria (14-3) submitted Laura Balin (4-2) in the 2nd round with a RNC. She has now won 10 in a row.
I'm not perfect, if I've missed a prospect let me know in the comments section.
