On the main card of UFC169, heavyweight Alistair Overeem (37-13, 1 NC) earned a one-sided unanimous decision victory over former champion Frank Mir (16-9). Overeem improved to a .500 record at 2-2 after four UFC fights. Mir is now on a four fight losing streak and 14-9 inside the Octagon.
The Reem hurt Mir early in the first with a brutal knee in the clinch. However, the action slowed to a crawl after Mir was able to survive. Through the final two rounds, Overeem kept control with top position and limiting Mir to only five successful strikes.
What was the high point of the fight?
Obviously, the near finish in round 1. Overeem caught Mir with a big knee then followed him to the ground looking for the finish.
Where do they go from here?
Far from the most exciting, but it was a much needed win for Alistair. He'd disappointed in his last two performance and needed to get a mark in the win column. I've seen a lot of people call for a rematch with Mark Hunt, but I expect the UFC to once again try to match him up with Junior dos Santos.
Mir squashed the idea of him retiring with a loss prior to the fight. There's been a lot of talk about him getting cut with the four-fight losing streak but I doubt the UFC goes that route. I say give him the winner of Matt Mitrione and Brendan Schaub or put him against Stefan Struve when he returns to action.
