Chael Sonnen may be retired, but that's not going to stop him from getting under the skin of UFC fighters. The latest target for Chael was Tim Kennedy, who lost a controversial fight with Yoel Romero at UFC 178. Sonnen spoke to guest Michael Bisping on his podcast, "You're Welcome", about Kennedy's issues with Romero being allowed to stay on his stool too long between the second and third rounds, which Sonnen dubbed 'stoolgate':
"Tim Kennedy is one cranky and bitter son of a bitch. Have you seen some of the stuff he’s saying lately? He’s threatening to never come back to the sport because he’s so upset about ‘Stoolgate'.This guy’s one of these guys that, for me, he gets a pass. I’m an American, he’s an American hero. He served the country well. He did some things, he’s a hero. That’s where it ends. But the guy says some stuff that if he wasn’t a hero - somebody needs to tell him to shut up. Tim, you gotta stop, man. You’re so bitter."
"Tim was so worked up about it. I’m going, ‘Tim, anything that you want to do and all of this anger, man, I’m for it.’ We’re for that before the fight. But when the fight’s done, when the pay-per-views are sold, when the cage is being torn down - shut up. Give the other guy his 15 minutes, whether he earned it or he was gifted it. Give him his 15 minutes and walk away."
Bisping (who was defeated by Kennedy earlier in the year) also added his two cents, saying that it didn't go to a controversial decision or anything and Kennedy got knocked out shortly after the incident anyway, and he doesn't have grounds to complain.
Well, it didn't take long for the words to trickle back to Kennedy. He spoke to MMA Junkie, saying that he's been hunting a lot lately and hasn't said anything for five weeks. He then proceeded to unload on Sonnen, even going as far to say that he'd take him on in Metamoris:
"Chael is being an ignorant idiot that evidently doesn’t have any idea what he’s talking about.
I didn’t walk back to Yoel – Yoel was chasing me down after the fight trying to apologize for cheating. Watch the video. It’s very clear that is exactly what happened."
I haven’t said a thing for the past five weeks; all I’ve been doing is hunting. But I guess I shouldn’t worry about it. It’s coming from a retired, PED using felon. Maybe he’s trying to promote a fight in (grappling event) Metamoris, and if that is the case, I will happily choke him out."
My guess is that we haven't heard the end of this. Sonnen has a podcast to share his thoughts on anything and everything, and Kennedy's not exactly known for keeping quiet when people come at him. It's too bad Chael is retired - that'd be a pretty good fight.
