UFC on Fox 13 results: Mitrione TKOs Gonzaga; Overeem batters Struve

A pair of heavyweight fights opend up the UFC on Fox 13 main card, as Matt Mitrione took on Gabriel Gonzaga and Stefan Struve made his return against Alistair Overeem.

The UFC on Fox 13 main card is centered around the heavyweights, including the night's main event between Junior dos Santos and Stipe Miocic. But before we could get to that pivotal contest, the other heavyweights on the broadcast took center stage, with both fights ending in the 1st round.

Matt Mitrione and Gabriel Gonzaga spent the entirety of their (brief) fight trading shots, but "Meathead" landed the most important one. As Gonzaga was coming towards him on the inside, Mitrione dropped the former title challenger with a clean left hook. Gonzaga fell to the canvas, Mitrione swarmed, and then when it looked like Herb Dean had stopped the fight, Gonzaga rose up and was clobbered one more time before Herb called it off. Replays show that Dean never motioned to stop it and that Mitrione let Gonzaga slowly get up ... only to clock him again. Official time of the TKO win is 1:59 into round 1. Mitrione (9-3) has won 3 straight, while Gonzaga (16-9) drops his 2nd in a row.

Alistair Overeem aimed to avoid another upset loss in the UFC against fellow Dutchman Stefan Struve, and he did just that. While neither man was too aggressive on the feet, Overeem was able to get Struve to the ground, land some ground-and-pound, and thwart any triangle or armbar attempts by Struve. When Struve pushed Overeem off, it looked like the fight would return to standing, but Overeem patiently waited and jumped into Struve's guard, hurt him with a hard left hand and then unleashed a series of hard punches that finished Struve off. Official time of the KO is 4:14 of round 1. Overeem (38-14, 1 NC) records his 3rd UFC win and his 2nd finish (both in the 1st round). Struve (25-7) loses his 2nd straight and hasn't won a fight since beating UFC on Fox 13 headliner Stipe Miocic in 2012.
