UFC on Fox 13 had an early local start time in Phoenix, with fights beginning at 1:30 PM MT at the US Airways Center. Here's a quick recap of the first half of the nine-fight preliminary card in the UFC's first appearance in the Sun Devil State.

The card began with a Fight Pass opener between Anthony Birchak vs. Ian Entwistle. Birchak was making his UFC debut while Entwistle was coming off a loss in his. Entwistle, who fights out of Thailand by way of England, immediately went for the heel hook after being taken down, and despite Birchak's best efforts to roll out of it, Entwistle stayed committed to getting his submission and sure enough Birchak (11-2) tapped in just 1:04. Entwistle (9-2) picks up his first win in the UFC.

It was a very successful debut for highly touted Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo. The bantamweight prospect took on Dustin Kimura and instead of showcasing his wrestling chops, the unbeaten Cejudo (7-0) dropped Kimura (11-3) early in the 1st round with a hard right hand and went for the finish, but couldn't pull off the TKO. Nevertheless, Cejudo was content to show off his striking skills throughout the bout and Kimura has no answers. The judges scored the fight unanimously for Cejudo (30-27, 30-27, 30-27). While Henry remains undefeated, Kimura has lost 3 of his last 4.

The Fight Pass prelims concluded with lightweights David Michaud and Garrett Whiteley going to battle. Michaud survived a knockdown in the 2nd round and a nasty cut opened up by a Whiteley elbow to win a unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28) and get his first UFC win. Whiteley (7-3) is now 0-3 in the UFC and likely on his way out of the promotion. Michaud (9-1) proved to be the stronger man and Whiteley was unable to cope with him in the clinch and on the ground.

Opening up the Fox Sports 1 broadcast was Joe Ellenberger welcoming Bryan Barberena to the UFC. In the opening round, Ellenberger was able to impose his game with takedowns and ground-and-pound while Barberena was generally unable to generate any offense. However, Ellenberger was clearly slowing down in the 2nd round and Barberena capitalized with heavy elbows and punches. Barberena completed the comeback by hurting Ellenberger against the fence, forcing him to drop to the canvas, and then strategically landing a series of strikes while Ellenberger could only cover himself. Herb Dean stopped the fight at 3:24 of round 3. Barberena (10-2) wins on short notice while Ellenberger (15-2) loses his first UFC fight.
