Melvin Manhoef: I’ll fight for Bellator title with win over Joe Schilling on Saturday

Kickboxing veteran Melvin Manhoef discusses his upcoming feature fight on the Bellator 131 fight card against Joe Schilling.

While the main focus on the highly anticipated Bellator 131 fight card is on the grudge match main event between UFC veterans Tito Ortiz and Stephan Bonnar, as well as the lightweight title fight between Will Brooks and Michael Chandler, several other compelling match-ups will be placed on the main card, including a potential ‘Fight of the Night' between Melvin Manhoef and Joe Schilling.

When asked whether he agrees with fan perception that his feature fight could make for the most entertaining television viewing of the entire evening, Manhoef concurred.

"We have similar fighting styles - high class kickboxing," Manhoef told FightHub. "Joe [Schilling] is coming forward, I'm coming forward, so it is going to be blessed - going to be fireworks."

The longtime kickboxing and MMA competitor admit that his main focus has not been on MMA and that he expects his upcoming fight to take place primarily in the striking department.

"I think it is a kickboxing match in a cage. It's not different. We are both going to stand on our feet. But it is smaller gloves, so it is going to be hard."

Manhoef was also informed that a title shot would be in his future if he defeated Joe Schilling on Saturday night.

"My goal in MMA is to become champion of Bellator," he explained. "That is my primary goal. I think my next fight is going to be a title fight, because that is what they told [me]."
