Joseph Benavidez has been angling for another shot at UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson, and his performance at UFC Fight Night 28 might have cemented that. The Team Alpha Male product stopped opponent Jussier Formiga in just over three minutes via TKO, clipping him with a knee to the body and a punch that dropped Formiga, then pounded him out. The finish came at 3:07 of round one.
They duked it out on the feet at first, with Formiga landing the more powerful shots early but Joe B. was landing more. Benavidez scored with a two-punch combination, which seemed to turn the tide a bit. After that, the knee scored the big knockdown, and the fight was over not long after that.
The win was Joe B's third in a row and moved him to 4-1 overall at 125 lbs. The only loss was via split decision to the champ last year. Formiga, the former # 1 flyweight in the world, dropped to 1-2 in the UFC with the loss.
