Through the first 6 months of 2013, the UFC had yet to crown a new champion. On July 6th, Chris Weidman became the first new champ after a shocking KO of Anderson Silva. It is arguably the most astonishing scene of 2013 in the MMA landscape. Silva gets the chance to avenge his first ever UFC loss and recapture that middleweight title he'd possessed for 7 years. If Weidman wins in convincing fashion again, one would have to start talking about Weidman as a future all-time great.
The co-main event is a women's bantamweight title fight between Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate. This was supposed to beat Rousey vs. Cat Zingano, but Zingano's knee injury forced her off of both TUF and the title fight. Tate, who was stopped by Zingano in April, nearly took Rousey to the 2nd round before she fell victim to the armbar with 15 seconds left in the 1st.
Dana White says this event will be bigger than UFC 100. I think that's an impossibility, but there's no doubt that this will be a fascinating spectacle.
Here's what the card, scheduled for December 28th at the MGM Grand, looks like so far:
Chris Weidman vs. Anderson Silva
Ronda Rousey vs. Miesha Tate
Travis Browne vs. Josh Barnett
Dustin Poirier vs. Diego Brandao
Dennis Siver vs. Manny Gamburyan
Gleison Tibau vs. Michael Johnson
Chris Leben vs. Uriah Hall
