Stephen Thompson vs. Chris Clements -- Welterweight bout

"Wonderboy" Thompson showed more of his atypical Kenpo karate style by standing in a distinctly closed stance and throwing front, side, roundhouse and even hook kicks with his lead-leg, using the myriad weaponry like a jab to control distance. Clements made an intelligent and creative adjustment by firing off a back-spinning low kick that slipped under Thompson's busy front leg and swept out his rear support leg.

The story of the fight and the future was Thompson's proficiency in other areas and how seamlessly he strung it all together. Thompson alternated between his closed stance and unusual kicking repertoire to a more traditional open stance and high-torque Muay Thai kicks, then to fast and lengthy boxing combos with a few solid takedown attempts mixed in to boot. Thompson eventually found the mark with a well-timed right in the second that blasted Clements off his feet.

  • Stephen Thompson defeats Chris Clements by TKO (punches), Round 2
