Charles Oliveira was scheduled to battle Estevan Payan on the preliminary card of UFC 166, but an injury to Payan forced him out of the card. That left Oliveira without an opponent, as was the case for Jeremy Larsen following the tragic car accident that has put Matt Grice in the ICU. The UFC announced last night that Oliveira and Larsen will fight each other on October 16th:
With injuries to both @JeremyLarsenMMA and @CharlesDoBronxs Oliveira's opponents, the two featherweights will now face each other #UFC166
— UFC (@ufc) September 11, 2013
Oliveira (16-4, 1 NC) moved to featherweight after a TKO loss to Donald Cerrone in 2011. After winning his first two fights, Oliveira was stopped by Cub Swanson at UFC 152 and outpointed by Frankie Edgar in a FOTN performance at UFC 162. As it stands he's won just 2 of his last 7 fights.
Larsen (8-4, 1 NC) is without a win in the UFC, having been knocked out by Joe Proctor and Lucas Martins in 2011 and 2013 respectively. He fought on TUF 15 but was quickly eliminated in the preliminary round by eventual tournament winner Michael Chiesa. Larsen is making his featherweight debut.
UFC 166 is headlined by a heavyweight trilogy bout between Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos.
