In the main event at UFC on Fox 8, UFC Flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson (17-2-1 MMA; 5-1-1 UFC) puts his title on the line against contender John Moraga (13-1 MMA; 2-0 UFC). The official UFC rankings currently have Moraga as the #4 contender at Flyweight, while champion Johnson is #7 on the pound-for-pound list. UFC on Fox 8 airs live from Seattle this Saturday, July 27, on Fox with the main card starting at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.
This is the second time the Flyweight title has been defended, and both defenses have come on Fox. The jury is still out on if that's a good thing or not. On the one hand, it gives more casual fan visibility to this still developing division. On the other hand, it can also give the impression that this division is not yet "PPV ready." Whatever you think of the politics, this is definitely a fight with potential to be a load of fun - but aren't they always at Flyweight?
How do these two stack up?
Johnson: 26 years old | 5'3" | 66" reach
Moraga: 29 years old | 5'6" | 67" reach
What have these two done recently?
How did these two get here?
Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson had a good run at Bantamweight in the WEC and UFC, including challenging for Dominick Cruz's UFC belt. But since dropping down to Flyweight, he's been great. He's 3-0-1 in the division and now making his 2nd title defense. A tremendously well rounded fighter, Johnson works with the great Matt Hume to perfect his already great game. It will be interesting to see how long he can maintain dominance over this young division.
John Moraga is a talented fighter out of Arizona. A good wrestler, Moraga made his name on the regional scene in Arizona, going 11-1 before signing with the UFC (his lone loss comes against former #1 contender John Dodson). He's been very impressive in his two UFC wins. But if we're being honest, he's not the kind of fighter that screams "title shot" at this point in his career. His shot here is largely a function of a shallow UFC division. Still, he has the shot, let's see what he can do with it.
Why should you care?
I enjoy watching Johnson fight, and expect another entertaining performance this time out.
