    Scouting Report Review - Welterweights

A year ago, we selected the inaugural class of fighters that would make up the first edition of the World MMA Scouting Report. It's been a gratifying experience to see some of the athletes we selected go on to succeed in major fight opportunities, and a heartbreaking one to see others come up just short.

Welterweight Scouting Report: #1 - Yuri Villefort

We're down to our #1 ranked prospect on our 2011 World MMA Welterweight Scouting Report, and he embodies the idea that the new breed of mixed martial artists will be exactly that... mixed martial artists. We've heard countless predictions that the youth who grew up watching the UFC and mixed martial arts in general would be a much more diverse group of fighters at a younger age.

Welterweight Scouting Report: #2 - Alex Garcia

Our #2 ranked prospect on our 2011 World MMA Welterweight Scouting Report doesn't quite fit the mold of our past picks, and it'll probably thrill a few readers that this prospect trains out of Firas Zahabi's camp in Canada while hailing from the Dominican Republic. With ferocious takedowns and brutalizing strength, Alex Garcia (6-0) has the skills and support to make a run for the UFC near the end of 2011.

Welterweight Scouting Report: #3 - Erick Silva

As we crack the top three on the 2011 World MMA Welterweight Scouting Report, we've began to delve into the more well-rounded prospects on our list. Our #3 ranked prospect, Team Nogueira's Erick Silva (12-1), is one of the most skilled fighters not yet signed to a major promotion, but a recent victory over prospect Gil de Freitas during his run to capture the Jungle Fight welterweight crown...

Welterweight Scouting Report: #4 - Douglas Lima

One of those fighters, our #4 ranked welterweight prospect in Douglas Lima (17-4), has received a lot of attention as he's battled it out with some of the better prospects in the world in bouts under the Maximum Fighting Championships banner. With slick Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Lima has solidified himself as a prospect who will undoubtedly be receiving calls from major promotions soon, if not already.

Welterweight Scouting Report: #5 - Luis Santos

It's hard to believe that a fighter in the landscape of welterweight prospects has amassed a record of over 50 fights by the age of 30, but our #5 ranked welterweight prospect on our 2011 World MMA Welterweight Scouting Report, Luis "Sapo" Santos (46-6), has achieved that milestone

Welterweight Scouting Report: #6 - Jesse Juarez

Coming in at #6 on our 2011 World MMA Welterweight Scouting Report is two-time NAIA All-American wrestler and 2005 NAIA National Champion Jesse Juarez (15-6). Despite losing to American Top Team product Douglas Lima at MFC 27 only eleven days ago, Juarez could have the opportunity to produce a berth in a major promotion in 2011 if he can pick up some wins against veteran competition.

Welterweight Scouting Report: #7 - Gunnar Nelson

The term "prodigy" hasn't been used in quite a long time, but our #7 ranked welterweight prospect, Gunnar Nelson (8-0-1), may be one of the only fighters in the world today who might embody what the terms represents.

Welterweight Scouting Report: #8 - Quinn Mulhern

Quinn Mulhern (13-1) is probably a name you've heard often in your viewing of HDNet's coverage of King of the Cage on the occasional Friday night broadcast. He's made quite the name for himself as a slick submission artist on the ground who uses quick transitions and lengthy limbs to put opponents away.

Welterweight Scouting Report: #9 - Alberto Mina

Fortunately for fans, our #9 ranked welterweight, Alberto Mina (6-0), has had some success in his short mixed martial arts career in implementing his Judo. Combined with a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, Mina has tore through the regional circuit in England and now makes a strong case for a potential shot at the UFC.

Welterweight Scouting Report: #10 - Joe Ray

Continuing our 2011 World MMA Scouting Report, we'll now turn our attention to the prospects littering the landscape of the 170 pound weight class. The surprise to both myself and smoogy in researching this division was the scarcity of high-level fighters making their way through the ranks, and the fact that Brazil has once again produced many of the talented fighters on our ranking.
