Nate Diaz suspended by UFC for 90 days and fined $20,000

UFC lightweight Nate Diaz received his punishment for a controversial tweet today, and it will see him cough up some money and sit out for a while.

USA TODAY Sports

Nate Diaz's ill-advised tweet about Bryan Caraway. will cost him some money and put him on the sidelines for a little while. UFC president Dana White said yesterday that Nate's fate would be decided today, and it's official - he will be suspended for 90 days and fined $20,000. The organization released a statement on the issue minutes ago:

UFC lightweight Nate Diaz has received an immediate 90-day suspension and $20,000 fine for violating the UFC's fighter code of conduct. The language used in his tweet was regrettable, offensive and inconsistent with the values and culture of the organization, and is not tolerated.

The money will be donated to charity.

Nate's tweet was in regards to Pat Healy being denied his UFC 159 bonus money due to a positive test for marijuana metabolites, and the $65,000 submission of the night bonus being awarded to Caraway instead. Caraway put out a statement thanking the UFC, but blasting people for marijuana use in the process. Apparently Diaz wasn't a fan, and used some regrettable language in his description of the bantamweight fighter.

The suspension obviously doesn't mean a whole lot, since Diaz just fought last month and likely wasn't going to in the next three months anyway. He's also medically suspended by the California State Athletic Commission anyway. I'm sure he's not happy with the fine though.
