Last weekend during World Series of Fighting 2, Ray Sefo announced that the winner of Josh Burkman/Aaron Simpson would "likely" face former UFC welterweight Jon Fitch. Burkman knocked out Simpson on Saturda, and now he gets to fight Fitch in the main event of WSOF 3 in Las Vegas. MMA Fighting confirmed the news today:
The former UFC welterweight contender will meet Josh Burkman at WSOF 3 on June 14 in Las Vegas, Ray Sefo, WSOF president, confirmed the news with MMAFighting.com Wednesday. Both fighters recently verbally agreed to the bout.
The non-title welterweight clash will serve as the main event of WSOF 3.
Believe it or not, these two fought each other in the UFC back in 2006, with Fitch winning by 2nd round submission. Fitch would soon become the #1 contender at 170 lbs while Burkman eventually fizzled out of the ranks and was released from the UFC.
As you may recall, Fitch was controversially given the UFC pink slip following a decision loss to Demian Maia in February. That dropped his record to 1-2-1 in his last 4, but he still had a 14-3-1 overall mark. Meanwhile, Burkman has gone 7-1 since his 2008 release, and 2-0 under the WSOF banner.
This event will be televised on a Friday night live on NBC Sports Network. No venue has been announced as of this writing.
