Brazil's Globo TV is reporting that the camp of UFC Middleweight champ Anderson Silva is once again teasing the possibility of a super fight with UFC Light Heavyweight champ Jon Jones. Be warned that Silva's camp seemingly delights in putting out these statements, to the point that UFC president Dana White has said they love "trolling" the MMA media.
In this instance it's Silva's Brazilian agent Jorge Guimaraes who is doing the talking. Middle Easy did the following translation of his comments:
Brazil's SportTV talked to Anderson Silva's agent, Jorge Guimaraes (a really cool guy, by the way) and he said although nothing is confirmed, Silva vs. Jones is on the horizon. Anderson Silva also believes the fight shouldn't be for the belt (hence the catchweight). Jorge also confirmed that Anderson Silva will defend his title this Summer and a Jones/Silva superfight could happen later in the year, preferably in New York and only at a catchweight of 87kgs (which comes out to about 190 lbs).
The most interesting things in this statement are the confirmation that Silva plans to defend his belt this summer. That keeps the possibility of a Silva vs Chris Weidman title fight alive. In the past Silva's camp has said they want to have that fight in Brazil. The UFC would probably prefer to have that bout as part of their big July 4th weekend show (Saturday, July 6th) which will include a Fan Expo and as many big fights as they can possibly include.
Should Silva win that fight, a super fight with Jones in the fall would no doubt be perfect for the UFC's hoped-for New York debut in Madison Square Garden to celebrate their 20th anniversary in November.
Keep in mind, Silva's camp has recently talked about him dropping down to 170lbs to face Welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre so take all of the above with many grains of salt.
