Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar has lost his last three fights, all in title matches, and his decision defeat against Jose Aldo at 145 lbs has now put him in a position where he has to earn his way towards another title shot, something he has not had to do for several years. Last night, UFC Tonight and Ariel Helwani reported what Edgar has in mind for his future plans, and it includes a possible five-round fight with Cub Swanson:
Edgar is eyeing a five-round headlining fight against top contender Cub Swanson on an FX or FUEL TV card, our own Ariel Helwani reported on UFC Tonight. If that's unavailable, Edgar also suggested a fight against either Swanson or Dennis Siver at UFC 160 -- a fight card which happened to receive a few attractive additions late last night.
Edgar has not fought a three-round fight since 2009, when he choked out Matt Veach on the main card of the TUF 10 Finale. Since then, Edgar has fought in 7 consecutive title fights. The Aldo loss was clear-cut enough that that streak has come to an end.
I think it would be fantastic to see Edgar vs. Swanson in a five-round main event, especially on an FX card. A fight with Siver wouldn't be too bad either, but Swanson is easily the better fighter right now and would be excellent use of the five-round non-title bout.
