The opening bout of the TUF 18 Finale was a battle in the flyweight division, and the two men most definitely brought it. Josh Sampo and Ryan Benoit were both looking to make an impact in their UFC debut but it was Sampo that pulled out the victory by submitting his opponent in the second round with a rear naked choke. The finish came at 4:31 of the stanza.
Benoit got off to a good start early with his hands but was shook by a Sampo counter right and it slowed him down. Sampo got a takedown and worked to mount but Benoit was able to reverse and spend some time on top. The last 90 seconds of the round were contested on the feet, with Sampo bloodying up Benoit with some hard shots.
The second round featured some great grappling from both men. Each hit reversals and threatened on the ground, but it was Sampo that was finally able to get to mount and work an armlock. Just as Benoit tried to escape Sampo deftly locked on a choke and got the tap.
