UFC 166: Melendez's banged-up thumb, Cain's representatives confused

Gilbert Melendez reveals a thumb injury, and Cain Velasquez's representatives take issue with his reported jaw injury.

The three round battle between Diego Sanchez and Gilbert Melendez was arguably the best fight of the year thus far, and it showed on the face of Diego Sanchez. He received a long medical suspension related to the facial cuts that he received. Initially, Gilbert Melendez appeared to escape the bout relatively unscathed, and his suspension extends only until November 19. However, on the October 22nd edition of MMA Junkie Radio he revealed that he did suffer from at least one minor injury.

"I feel like I'm healthy. I hit my thumb and its swollen on there. I don't think its broken, but its swollen. I don't want to hit nobody on it right now or anything like that."

Melendez didn't sound completely sure about the severity of his thumb injury. This might be worth following.

UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez also received a lengthy suspension from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation due to a suspected broken jaw. That came as surprising news to Cain and his representatives. Heidi Seibert, a spokesperson for Zinkin Entertainment Co, is quoted by saying "He's been eating whatever he wants. He's fine." Furthermore, Velasquez has not seen a doctor because he felt there was no need to see one.

If Cain's jaw was truly broken, he probably would have noticed by now and sought medical attention. The full list of UFC 166 medical suspensions can be seen at
