Tonight marks the end of the "Strikeforce Era" in mixed martial arts as the promotion, once seen as a potential rival to the UFC prior to being acquired by Zuffa, puts on it's last ever show. Bloody Elbow will have complete results and play-by-play for the show starting with the Showtime Extreme undercard (8 p.m. ET) and continuing through the main card on Showtime (10 p.m. ET).
This post will cover the results for the undercard.
There are four bouts currently scheduled for the Showtime Extreme portion of the undercard and some fairly big names in the history of the promotion will be a part of the undercard broadcast.
Pat Healy was scheduled to fight Gilbert Melendez for the Strikeforce lightweight title before Melendez had to pull out of the bout due to an injury. Healy will now be facing Kurt Holobaugh on Extreme. Roger Gracie will be in action when he faces off with Anthony Smith.
Former title contender Tim Kennedy will take on Trevor Smith and Ryan Couture will face KJ Noons in a lightweight battle to round out the undercard.
Roger Gracie vs. Anthony Smith - Round 1 - Smith with a leg kick and he looks like he really wants to keep distance. Smith looping his punches in from outside but isn't really connecting too solidly. Smith still circling and Gracie hasn't done much of anything beyond poke a bit with the jab. Gracie gets in with a single leg and Smith grabs the cage to get away. Smith connects with another leg kick. Gracie is super stiff and just not doing anything here while Smith at least scores with leg kicks. Smith with a combo at the end of the round and that's a clear 10-9 round for Smith.
Round 2 - Gracie looks unbelievably uninterested in this fight. Smith tags him but now Gracie actually lands a few punches. Smith clinches him against the cage, Gracie with a thai clinch and now goes right into a takedown. Gracie passing now. Gracie into full mount. Gracie with an arm triangle and there's the tap. On the ground, Gracie was totally in control, on the feet? Brutal. Roger Gracie wins by submission (arm triangle choke), round 2.
Pat Healy vs. Kurt Holobaugh - Round 1 - They come out throwing and Holobaugh catches him a little bit but Healy locks up with him. Holobaugh opening up again and he's really tagging him. Healy with the takedown now though and he's on top picking his spots a bit. Holobaugh suddenly goes for an omoplata to a toe hold. Healy gets out and lands a punch. Healy back on top but Holobaugh manages to stand back up. Holobaugh ends up on top as they tumble to the ground, Holobaugh tries to take the back, but Healy ends up in the better position working for a rear naked choke as the round ends. 10-9 Healy.
Round 2 - Healy with a few punches, Holobaugh firing back but Healy gets the quick takedown. Healy into mount now, Holobaugh gives up his back and Healy is punching away. Holobaugh manages to stand up with Healy still on his back. As they scramble on the ground, Healy gets the reverse triangle choke and he's looking for an arm. Eventually Holobaugh gets free but he's still on bottom getting ground out. 10-9 Healy.
Round 3 - Healy with a right hand but he's missing a lot of weary looking punches. Hard shots from Holobaugh. Healy is badly hurt but he does end up on top once Holobaugh looked for an armbar. Holobaugh looking for an omoplata now. Healy gets out and now he's on top looking to finish an arm triangle. The choke is very deep but Holobaugh manages to survive. Healy takes the round. 30-27 on my card.
Official Scorecards: 29-28, 30-27 (x2). Pat Healy wins by unanimous decision.
Tim Kennedy vs. Trevor Smith - Round 1 - Kennedy with the low kick and Smith working hard for the takedown and he does manage to get it. Kennedy gets back to his feet. Smith with a leg kick and Kennedy cracks him with an uppercut. Kennedy gets taken down but does manage to get back to his feet. Now Kennedy with the takedown, but Smith right back up. Kennedy with another uppercut and a body kick. Kennedy tags him with a kick and Smith with another desperation takedown. 10-9 Kennedy I suppose.
Round 2 - Smith with a big punch and he gets the takedown. Kennedy gets a takedown now and he's in half guard with 3:30 left in the round. I kind of zoned out. This has looked like a sparring session. Smith is trying hard, he's making it ugly and not getting blown out but Kennedy is doing "enough."
Round 3 - Smith very tired here and Kennedy is starting to open up with kicks, uppercuts and knees. Smith trying for another takedown and Kennedy avoids and gets a very tight guillotine and there's the tap. Tim Kennedy wins by submission (guillotine choke), round 3.
KJ Noons vs. Ryan Couture - Round 1 - Couture circling, Noons in the center of the cage, looking to pick his spot to throw his hands. Leg kick by Couture lands. KJ working to the body early. They tangled up for a second and Couture landed a nice knee insinde. Uppercut by Noons just off the mark. KJ working the uppercut a lot now. Couture with the low kick again. Right hand by Noons now. Short inside right by Noons. Uppercut again by Noons. Noons starting to put punches together now. Noons with another right and then he's out of the way of Couture's punch. Leg kick by Couture. Big uppercut from Noons and then a right hand. Good spinning back kick from Couture. 10-9 Noons.
Round 2 - Uppercut by Noons again. That punch is there for him all day. Noons still dictating everything on the feet. Clash of heads and Noons is split open. Couture trying to charge forward. Right hand by Noons and Couture is hurt. Uppercut and Couture's legs are gone. Noons is brutalizing him. KJ slowing down a bit now. Another big right hand by Noons. Noons with a bunch of big combos. Couture trying to pour it on. 10-9 Noons.
Round 3 - Noons avoiding punches from Couture early. Noons lands a hard left hand. Couture slips on the high kick. Right hand gets in from Couture. Hard body shot by Noons. Uppercut by Noons. Big right hand by Noons now. He's just blasting with power shots. 10-9 Noons for the sweep on my card. But a fun fight.
Official scorecards: 29-28 Couture, 30-27 Noons, 29-28 Couture. Ryan Couture wins by split decision.
