Opening up the UFC On Fox 4 main card broadcast, Welterweight Mike Swick finally made his long awaited return to the Octagon against DaMarques Johnson. Although the action was a bit sloppy, it was a non-stop high paced fight with both fighters coming close to finishing the bout. Swick sealed the deal in the second round with a violent TKO stoppage at 1:20. Swick improves to 10-3 in the UFC (15-4 Overall), while DaMarques Johnson drops to 4-5 (15-11).
Swick set the tone of the fight early when he landed a quick right hand that dropped Johnson. DaMaques recovered well and turned the tables when he put Swick on his back. Johnson was not content to play guard, however, and gained mount position where he landed some hard shots of his own. As Swick attempted to scramble out, Johnson grabbed a D'arce choke, but he was unable to finish and ended the round on top. Back on the feet in the second and Swick used his footwork and forced Johnson to chase him. He caught Johnson's leg, pushed him over and knocked him out with his first blow on the way down.
What was the high point of this fight?
Aside from the finish, the 1-2 combination that Mike Swick landed 20 seconds into the fight. Johnson said it well, that the odds were 50-50, but somebody was going out in this fight.
Where do they go from here?
Mike Swick picked up an emphatic and emotional victory here and he did it in exciting fashion. That alone should put him back in the good graces of the UFC brass. However, DaMarques Johnson is not the type of fighter an elite Welterweight should have trouble with. Hopefully, it was just a case of returning Octagon jitters, but based on his performance tonight, he's going to have to ease his way up the ladder.
This was a very big loss for DaMarques Johnson. The TUF 9 veteran has struggled throughout his UFC career and hasn't put together back to back wins in over two years. In most cases, this would easily be cause for release from the UFC. However, it's well known that the UFC sticks behind TUF competitors, so Johnson could easy get one more shot to save his spot on the roster.
Watch it now, never, or later?
Watch it now. This was the definition of a fun fight with action in every phase of MMA. On top of that it's capped off with a great finish.
