The UFC on Fox 5 co-main event may have just gotten a little more interesting. Before Lightweights Ben Henderson and Nate Diaz battle for the Lightweight title, Light Heavyweights Mauricio Rua and Alexander Gustafsson will square off in the Octagon. The fight was already highly anticipated by MMA fans and now UFC president Dana White is adding a new dynamic (via MMA Junkie):
Unless there's some crazy s--t that happens, which always does. Other than that, the winner of this fight will get the next shot.
"Shogun" Rua has heard this promise before. Both he and Lyoto Machida were promised contendership in their fights at UFC On Fox 4 depending on who had the more impressive. Machida won that battle with a clean KO of Ryan Bader, but was still passed over as next contender in favor of Chael Sonnen. However, if Shogun is able to upset Gustafsson he may get the chance to challenge Jon Jones for the title he used to hold.
This will be Alexander's first chance to earn the right to fight for the title. He's entering the bout on a 5 fight win streak with 2 impressive KO victories over Matt Hamill and Vladimir Matyushenko, as well as a decision win over Thiago Silva in his last three fights. The lone blemish on his UFC record came at the hands of an up-and-coming Phil Davis who has able to submit Alex in the first round of their fight.
UFC On Fox 5 is coming up this Saturday at the Key Arena in Seattle, WA. Former champion B.J. Penn will also appear on the card with a fight against rising star Rory MacDonald.
