At UFC On Fox 5, UFC Welterweight Rory MacDonald dominated former champion B.J. Penn from bell to bell. Rory looked like he might get a finish in the first round when he rocked Penn with a standing elbow. Penn survived only to be bludgeoned with body shots in the second. Again Penn made it through to be outclassed again in the third.
Millions of people watched Rory's destruction of Penn including boxing great Oscar De La Hoya. De La Hoya was very into Rory's fight and offered him advice via Twitter. He added to that Wednesday in an interview with Fight HUb TV:
I was wondering, "Why don't you just go finish him?" You know, he looks like he has talent. He looks like he has that little it factor. He just has to keep on working that. You have to feel that killer instinct. Feel it! And go after it! You have to feel it, grab it, get it!
I would love to see him use that jab to the body. If I was in there with that opponent he was fighting against, that jab to the body would have just paralyzed him. I mean, it would have. You can see it, I mean obviously you can see some things from outside. But he's a talented fighter. My hat goes off to him.
Rory will have a chance to take Oscar's advice in March at UFC 158. He got the rematch he requested in his Fox 5 post-fight interview against Carlos Condit. Back at UFC 115, Condit finished MacDonald in the closing seconds of their first fight. It remains the only blemish on Rory's otherwise spotless record. With Condit coming off a title shot against Georges St. Pierre, an impressive win for Rory could launch him right into contention.
