In what can probably be considered an injury replacement "upgrade", 21-year-old featherweight prospect Max Holloway has stepped in on short notice for Cody McKenzie, and will fight Leonard Garcia in what should be a candidate for FOTN. UFC officials confirmed the news earlier today.
Holloway (6-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) is the youngest fighter on the UFC's roster and is easily one of the more exciting prospects out there. His debut came in February at UFC 143 against contender Dustin Poirier, While the inexperienced Holloway showed his deficiencies on the ground and was eventually submitted, he put up a respectable showing against a heavy favorite. Since then, dominant wins over Pat Schilling and Justin Lawrence -- the latter by TKO -- have drawn the eyes of fans entertained by his broad variety of punches, kicks, and knees.
Garcia (15-9-1 MMA, 2-5 UFC) has lost 3 in a row since his ... contestable decision win over Nam Phan in Las Vegas. He's known for his memorable brawling style and iron chin, but the former #1 featherweight contender in the WEC is possibly facing an ousting from the UFC with another loss. Leonard has never been stopped by strikes in his MMA career, which is quite incredible given the number of shots he has taken in multiple FOTN performances from the WEC to the UFC.
I think this is a great fight for the fans and hopefully it delivers some crowd-pleasing action. It is unknown whether or not this fight will take place on FX or Facebook.
