UFC 154: Martin Kampmann says win over Hendricks solidifies number one contender spot

Mark Kolbe

The welterweight bout between Martin Kampmann and Johny Hendricks is a matchup pitting two of the guys with the best cases at a title shot in the division against each other. Curiously though, the bout hasn't been marketed as a number one contender bout by the UFC. Kampmann, in an interview on Sherdog Radio, says it doesn't matter either way - if he wins, he deserves a title shot:

"If I win this fight, I am the No. 1 contender," Kampmann told the Sherdog Radio Network's "Beatdown" show. "No doubt. Nobody's got the same resume I do in the UFC in the welterweight division. I've beaten the best guys. There's no other welterweight that's coming on the same streak that I have."

...

"There’s other guys coming up with a bunch of hype behind them, but really who have they fought? They haven’t fought anybody tough," Kampmann said. "They haven’t fought anybody good, but they’re getting the hype train behind them. Look at the guys I’ve fought and compare that to anybody in the welterweight division. I’ve fought some of the best guys in the division."

He then went on to describe how him and Hendricks have trained together in the past, which adds another layer to the fight. Kampmann helped Hendricks with his striking, which Hendricks gave some tips on wrestling to the Danish fighter. All in all, it should make for a very interesting style clash.
