Demian Maia is a grappler again. The Brazilian BJJ wizard hadn't submitted anyone in his last nine bouts, but he showed fans a glimmer of the old Maia when he went right after Dong Hyun Kim in his welterweight debut. This time against Rick Story, he did it again. And was it ever effective. He submitted Story via rear naked choke exactly halfway through the first round.
Story landed a big right hook early. Maia looked for a takedown quickly and got it against the cage. Maia tried to take his back but Story returned to his feet briefly. He got taken back down though, and Maia moved into mount. Maia moved to the back with hooks and landed a few punches. Maia looked for the choke, and instead went for a version of a neck crank. Story tried to fight it off, but was in serious pain and blood was pouring out of his nose in a gruesome scene. Story had no choice to tap.
The win was Maia's second straight at welterweight, and quickly makes him a contender in the division.
