UFC 131 Results: Carwin vs. dos Santos - Play by Play and Live Commentary

As with every major show, Bloody Elbow will be here to bring you live results, play by play and commentary for UFC 131: Carwin vs. dos Santos. The live blog will start with the beginning of the Facebook undercard stream (5:50 p.m. ET), continuing through the Spike TV undercard broadcast (8 p.m. ET) through the pay-per-view (9 p.m. ET) so make sure to make Bloody Elbow your home for this event.

The event is headlined by a heavyweight bout between Junior dos Santos and Shane Carwin. The winner of the fight will battle heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez later this year. Also appearing on the card, Kenny Florian drops to featherweight for the first time to take on Diego Nunes. Middleweight contenders Demian Maia and Mark Munoz clash on the pay-per-view telecast along with Donald Cerrone vs. Vagner Rocha and Jon Olav Einemo vs. Dave Herman.

Jesse Bongfeldt vs. Chris Weidman - Round 1 - Head kick early by Weidman is blocked. Headkick by Bongfeldt has Weidman reeling but Weidman manages to clinch up and execute a throw that leads to him on top in side control. Bongfeldt manages to regain full guard but Weidman lands some decent shots. Weidman passes to north-south now but Bongfeldt spins back. Bongfeldt lands a few punches off his back. Weidman passes again and again is looking for an armbar but can't get the position. Bongfeldt escapes to standing and starts throwing his hands right away. Knee by Weidman and Bongfeldt reaches down and gets caught in a very deep standing guillotine and Bongfeldt has no choice but to tap out. Chris Weidman wins by submission (standing guillotine choke), round 1.

Yves Edwards vs. Sam Stout - Round 1 - Stout with a quick leg kick. Nice counter punch by Edwards. Body shot by Stout. Both men throwing a lot of strikes early and a front kick by Stout. Both guys with head kicks that miss and then a takedown by Yves and he tries to pass but Stout defends well. A little ground and pound by Edwards and then he manages to get back to standing. Jab by Edwards. Head kick by Yves is blocked. Overhand left lands hard for Stout as both men are throwing and Yves is out cold. That was brutal, brutal stuff. Sam Stout wins by KO (punch), round 1.

The PPV broadcast is starting. First fight up shortly.

Donald Cerrone vs. Vagner Rocha - Round 1 - Leg kick by Cerrone and another that lands on the cup of Rocha. Rocha eats a knee. Leg kick again by Cerrone. Takedown by Rocha and Cerrone tries for an omoplata and Rocha lands hammerfists allowing Cerrone to get to his feet. Rocha looking for the takedown again against the cage but Cerrone defends very well. More leg kicks by Cerrone. Rocha with a nice knee and a right hand that both land. Leg kick by Rocha now. Cerrone just keeps going back to the leg kicks. Rocha's shot attempts are coming from way too far out now. Rocha fails with another takeown attempt. Rocha throws a kick, Cerrone catches it and kicks his other leg out but forces him to stand again. Another leg kick. Jab by Cerrone and this fight is not particularly close. Right hand by Rocha but he eats one in return. 10-9 round for Cerrone.

Round 2 - Rocha's leg is really bothering him and Cerrone is going right back to it. Rocha throwing a few nice punches but Cerrone just gets back outside and goes back to the leg kicks. Rocha almost gets a takedown and continues to push Cerrone into the cage looking to get the fight to the ground. Cerrone manages to get away without being taken down. Right hand lands for Rocha. Another leg kick by Cerrone. Right hand by Rcha but he is still getting punished. Rocha pulls guard and Cerrone stands up without ever being in danger. More leg kicks. Push kick by Cerrone. Lazy shot attempt by Rocha and he's starting to beg Cerrone to come to the ground. Rocha keeps trying to find a way to get the fight to the ground but it's just not working and Cerrone is killing his leg. 10-9 Cerrone.

Round 3 - More. Leg. Kicks. Head kick by Cerrone is blocked. Rocha can barely stand and has been forced to switch to southpaw. Rocha is throwing the overhand right more to keep Cerrone away than to land. Rocha dives for a leg and can't get it. Body kick by Cerrone and another leg kick. Nice two punch combo by Cerrone. Hard leg kick with 20 seconds left. Big hook lands. Rocha falls down with 6 seconds left and the final horn blows. 10-9 Cerrone again.

Jon Olav Einemo vs. Dave Herman - Round 1 - Knee by Herman right away backs off Einemo. Leg kick by Herman and another. Einemo clinches him against the cage. Herman keeping himself standing well and lands a big knee. Right hand by Einemo. Right han by Einemo is a little short and he eats a leg kick. Einemo throwing hands but missing any real connection. Knee by Herman. Front kick by Herman. Left hand by Herman and he is starting to confuse Einemo with feints. Leg kicks by Herman are landing hard. Knee by Herman catches Einemo bending down. Two punches land for Herman. Body kick by Herman is caught by Einemo and he gets the takedown. Einemo passes to side control quickly. Herman uses the cage to spin and get to standing without taking any damage. Leg kick by Einemo. Knee and a right hand by Einemo. Uppercut by Einemo. Einemo with a takedown and Herman rolls him over as the round ends. 10-9 Herman on my card.

Round 2 - Elbow by Herman from the clinch early. Right hand by Einemo and an big one follows up. Herman with a front kick and a right hand. Standing axe kick by Herman. Knees by both men in the clinch. Big knee by Einemo. Herman is hurt. Big knee to the body and some punches and Einemo goes down. Herman landing some big elbows and he makes Einemo stand back up. Big punch by Herman. Big knees by Herman. Einemo is BADLY hurt and he crumbles. Herman landing big shots and the fight is stopped. Dave Herman wins by TKO (strikes), round 2.

Demian Maia vs. Mark Munoz - Round 1 - Maia looking to load up the left hand. He catches Munoz in the ear and Munoz goes rubber legged. Big punch by Maia lands hard and he pushes Munoz into the cage. Restart after a bit of a stalling out. Maia is just unloading combinations and Munoz is getting beat up on the feet. This is not a good development for Munoz. Maia continuing to dominate the round. 10-9 Maia.

Round 2 - Munoz with a big shot early and as Maia shoots it's Munoz landing hard punches to the body and thigh from the sprawl. Maia can't get the fight to the ground but he does land some good shots. Munoz with some nice power shots in return. Maia shoots again. Munoz looking to lock in a d'arce and Maia gets top position. Munoz manages to get back to standing though and Maia shoots again and he pulls guard. Maia almost took the back in the scramble but Munoz gets up.  Very high paced round. Munoz on top landing to the body now. Fight restarted with 10 seconds left and that is a 10-9 round for Munoz to even it up.

Round 3 - They hug to start the round and the crowd boos. right hand by Maia. Munoz with a takedown and Maia is back up. Munoz with another takedown attempt and Maia is trying to take the back and he almost finishes with a crucifix neck crank. Maia pushes him into the cage and Munoz turns it. Restart after no action. Left hand by Maia. Maia shoots but Munoz throws him to the ground. The round gets to the end with a few punches by each guy. 10-9 Maia on my card to give him the 29-28 win.

Kenny Florian vs. Diego Nunes - Round 1 - Florian throwing high kicks early. After a lot of feeling out with strikes it was Florian looking to get the takedown but Nunes reverses and pushes Florian into the cage. Nunes gets the takedown. They get back to standing quickly. Nunes with a leg kick and Florian fails with a takedown attempt. Right hand by Nunes lands hard and a leg kick. Florian doesn't look right. Spinning backfist lands for Nunes. Spinning back kick from Nunes misses. Florian with a jab and then he ducks under a punch and gets a takedown. Nunes manages to get to standing. Spinning elbow by Florian. Big shot by Nunes puts Florian on his back and Nunes tries to follow up before the round ends. 10-9 Nunes.

Round 2 - Nunes looking very relaxed before the start of the round. Head kick by Nunes is blocked. Florian looking for the takedown and Nunes manages to remain upright. Florian keeps pushing for the takedown and Nunes continues to fight it off and then gets a takedown of his own. Florian throwing the elbows and now looking to lock in a triangle. Nunes defends and the back of his head is cut from the elbows. Nunes finally gets a left hand through from the top. They're restarted after a stalemate. Body kick by Nunes. Left hand lands by Florian and a nice jab to follow. Nunes is in reverse a little bit and Florian gets the takedown. Florian trying to pass and gets pulled back into full guard but Florian landing good punches now. 10-9 round for Florian.

Round 3 - Florian is the much fresher man as the round starts. Nunes is in reverse here as both men land leg kicks. Neither man really doing much work in the first minute. Florian pawing with the jab. Knee to the body in the clinch by Florian and then he gets a very easy takedown. Florian landing punches from the half guard. Florian is just working on him from the top and Nunes has pretty much nothing left here. Nunes does manage to get to his feet and push Florian into the cage. Florian with the jab and Nunes misses a head kick. Head kick again and a flurry of punches. Florian just picking him apart with jabs. Two punches land fro Nunes. Big knee by Florian from the clinch. Nunes is giving it everything he has even when tired but Florian has taken the fight over. Big punch by Nunes and Florian buckles! But the final horn sounds. 10-9 Florian gives him the fight 29-28 on my card.

I guess if you win a fight, someone is giving you all three rounds. 

Shane Carwin vs. Junior dos Santos - Round 1 - Feeling out early. Carwin shoots in for the takedown early and JDS defending well. JDS gets off the cage. Right hand lands for Carwin. Right hand by JDS, left hand by Carwin. Right hand by Carwin and an uppercut by JDS. Right hand by Carwin glances. JDS a little short with the jab. Left hook lands for JDS. Carwin shoots, JDS slips down but manages to bounce right back up. Hook by JDS. JDS is landing the better punches in the stand up here. Right hand by JDS and Carwin is looking tired already. Big shots JDS and Carwin goes down. JDS pouring it on and Carwin trying to survive. Junior goes for the choke and can't get it. JDS going nuts with the punches and Carwin survives. He is bleeding badly but survives the round. 10-8 dos Santos.

Round 2 - Head kick by JDS misses. Huge overhand right by JDS misses. Carwin lands but JDS hits him better with an uppercut. Leg kick by JDS and this fight is slowing down a lot. Leg kick by Carwin. Another one. Leg kick in return by JDS. Big shot lands for Carwin and backs Junior up. Right hand by Carwin lands. He's still in this fight. Leg kick by Carwin again. Jab continues to land for JDS though. Head kick by JDS and Carwin mostly blocked it. Big right hand by Carwin and JDS digs to the body. 10-9 JDS again.

Round 3 - Carwin rushes in for the takedown. He gets it. JDS using the cage to try to stand and he does get back up. Knee to the body by Junior and he gets outside. Carwin trying to get close enough to land a punch but it just isn't happening. Jab by JDS as Carwin tries to close distance. Punch lands for Carwin. Nice hook lands for Junior. Nice punches by JDS and Carwin is just purely outclassed here. Right hand follows the jab for Junior. Junior just picking him apart. Big takedown by Junior out of nowhere and he gets kicked off by Carwin. Both men land punches and then Junior with a takedown. Carwin reverses him as the final horn sounds. 10-9 Junior. Carwin's face is an absolute mess.

Michihiro Omigawa vs. Darren Elkins

Round 1 — Omigawa switching stances early and keeping his hands a bit low. Omigawa tags Elkins with a left. Elkins responds with a right. Elkins gets on top briefly as Omigawa slips. Omigawa grabs a leg so Elkins immediately stands back up and out. Clubbing right to the side of the head for Elkins. Elkins with a combination. Then a "please stand by" graphic pops up with about a minute left in the round. This is cute. Picked it back up on Facebook. Elkins going to work. 10-9 Elkins.

Round 2 — Elkins is bleeding. Omigawa pushing the pace. The Facebook stream is really keeping me from calling this round. My apologies. No score. I believe it was Omigawa's round.

Round 3 — Elkins coming out swinging but gets taken down by Omigawa in the center of the cage. Half-guard into full guard. Right hand lands for Omigawa. They end up standing but Elkins' face is in rough shape. Omigawa just standing in the center of the cage waiting for Elkins to do something. Halfway through the round. Nice right by Elkins. Omigawa still actively switching stances. Elkins being active but can't find a home for his right. Omigawa stalking him. He hits a left. That's it. 10-9 Omigawa (29-28 Omigawa).

Official decision: Darren Elkins d. Michihiro Omigawa (Decision/Unanimous - 29-28x2, 30-27)

As the cards are read and his name is announced, Elkins can hardly believe he was given the nod. The crowd boos and Joe Rogan simply mutters, "Wow."

Joey Beltran vs. Aaron Rosa

Round 1 — Beltran drives Rosa into the cage. They break and Beltran lands a left that sends Rosa stumbling. Back against the cage. Short uppercuts by both men. Now they just tee off on each other as they break. Both men land hard, heavy shots. And again. Rosa bleeding from the nose. Back to clinching and they break. Beltran pushing the action. Another exchange. Leg kick for Beltran. Beltran to the body as they clinch against the cage. Another exchange against the cage. Both men just swinging it out. That's the round. They touch gloves after the horn. Beltran 10-9.

Round 2 — Rosa breathing very hard to start the round. Beltran with three shots that jack Rosa's jaw. They clinch against the cage. They break and Rosa connects. Nice combo by Beltran that finishes with a leg kick. They clinch and Rosa drops after a knee, a victim of a hard shot straight to the family jewels. He took one to the head right after before the action was stopped. Rosa's back up and here we go. Leg kick for Rosa. Rosa now coming in with some big shots and now he gets Beltran low with a knee. Wow. Beltran is OK. Under a minute to go. Uppercut for Rosa. Back to clinching against the cage. Both men throwing. Nice right by Beltran. Back to clinching against the cage. Round ends. Beltran 10-9.

Round 3 — Leg kick for Beltran. Rosa goes for a takedown but eats a knee for his troubles. Rosa with a big right but Beltran responds with a knee. They go down against the side of the cage and Beltran unloads. Rosa gets up but Beltran drags him back down into side control, lands a huge elbow that busts Rosa open and finishes the fight.

Dustin Poirier vs. Jason Young

Round 1 — They trade leg kicks to start and both men start swinging and landing. Poirier with a takedown against the cage but Young is looking for a kimura. They both give up their position and stand. They clinch against the cage. Poirier catches him with two nice shots as they separate. Young with a right that catches Poirier coming in. Poirier with a big leg kick but Young responds. Poirier tags Young a few times and he looks hurt a bit. Now they both swing. Young appears to be OK. Young is cut. He slips throwing a high kick but Poirier can't take advantage. They trade low kicks. 10-9 Poirier.

Round 2 — More leg kick trading to start the round. Young working the inside leg kick now. Poirier with an inside leg kick that catches Young low. Back underway. Young still looking to land leg kicks. Another. He is looking good with those. Poirier is nowhere near as active as he was in the first round. Young with a right hand. Another lands. Young leaps in with a flying knee but that doesn't work out well as Poirier responds with some huge shots. Young comes back and they start slugging and Poirier gets a takedown with 20 seconds left. It's not enough. 10-9 Young.

Round 3 — Both men active to start the round. Poirier puts Young on the cage and is in prime position for a double leg but can't get it. Nice job by Young. Now he's defending another one but he can't get it all the way, as Poirier takes him down with around 2:40 left. Young stands, Poirier drags him down and Young stands again. Poirier looking for another takedown and he drags him down with 1:45 to go. Poirier can't do anything and is eating elbows to the side. Young back up but Poirier is still on him. Back down. Under 45 seconds left. Again, Young stands but can't shake Poirier and now Poirier drags him to the middle of the cage and is in guard. Much-needed for Poirier. Young paintbrushing Poirier from the bottom. The fight ends with Poirier in half-guard. 10-9 Poirier (29-28 Poirier).

Nick Ring vs. James Head

Round 1 —Ring using the Thai clinch to his benefit early. Head lands a right. Ring scoops Head up and takes him down in the center of the cage. Side control. He moves to north-south but ends up losing what he had and Head gets up. Head with a knee. Head drops Ring. He cracks him. Ring trying to hold guard but they stand. Head with knees to the body and head. Ring takes them well. Front kick from Ring stumbles Head. Right hand stuns Ring but he comes back with a takedown with 40 seconds left. Half-guard. That's the round. 10-9 Ring.

Round 2 — Ring gets another takedown to start the round. Side control. Ring has a chance at a triangle from the top here. He loses it. North-south for a second just to move to the other side. Back to north-south. Head gains half-guard. Ring stands above Head and Head gets up but is taken back down seconds later, this time against the cage. Half-guard. Now Ring starting to unleash some ground-and-pound. Head is cut. Ring is in side control and Head looks like he wants no part of this anymore when referee Herb Dead stops the fight to check on the cut. Head's face is a bloody mess. The doctor checks it and Dean asks Head if he wants to continue and he agrees. We restart back in side control. Elbows for Ring. Ring is working him over here. Into north-south and then into the mounted crucifix but there's not enough time to finish. 10-8 Ring.

Round 3 — Ring gets a takedown but Head has Ring's head but gives it up rather quickly. Full guard. Scramble puts Ring into half-guard. Elbows for Ring. Ring into side control. North-south now. Landing some shots, but nothing that's going to threaten the fight. Head rolls, though, and Ring locks in a rear choke to finish it. He wasn't even on his back.

Official decision: Nick Ring d. James Head (Submission/Rear-Naked Choke) R3 3:33

Krzysztof Soszynski vs. Mike Massenzio

Round 1 — Massenzio gets a takedown 10 seconds in, but Soszynski threatens with a kimura and Massenzio gets up. They clinch against the cage and break. Massenzio gets another takedown. Soszynski looking to stand against the cage and does. Leg kick for Soszynski. Another. Soszynski stuffs a takedown and lands a right hand that sends Massenzio running. Massenzio takes the fight back down after a Soszynski leg kick. Half-guard with 90 seconds left. Massenzio stands in the guard and Soszynski stands and they clinch against the cage and are quickly broken up. Soszynski stuffs a takedown. Nice shots by Soszynski, so Massenzio goes for a takedown and Soszynski sprawls out. Massenzio 10-9.

Round 2 — Massenzio with a single attempt but Soszynski grabs a headlock that stops that in its tracks. Soszynski gives that up and sprawls. Massenzio on his knees with Soszynski in front of him. Not much happening. Massenzio stands. Another takedown attempt is stuffed by Soszynski. Massenzio shoots from almost halfway across the cage and Soszynski sees it coming a mile away and stuffs it. Left hand for Soszynski. Massenzio drives Soszynski halfway across the cage looking for a takedown but can't get it. Under a minute to go. Massenzio holding on for a takedown but it's going nowhere fast and the referee breaks them up. Soszynski lands some nice shots at the end of the round. 10-9 Soszynski.

Round 3 — Leg kick for Soszynski. Massenzio tiring. Soszynski stuffs a takedown attempt and takes his back. Massenzio rolls out of it and Soszynski is in side control. Massenzio rolls into turtle position. Soszynski working some elbows to the side of the body. Now some knees to the body. Soszynski with a bulldog choke but Massenzio ends up on top but Soszynski pops right back to his feet. Massenzio working for a takedown against the cage. This is against quickly broken up with 45 seconds left. Massenzio shoots to no avail. One last time is stuffed and that's it. 10-9 Soszynski (29-28 Soszynski).
