Brian Ebersole waited ten years to make his UFC debut but only took three rounds to shock UFC regular Chris Lytle at UFC 127. Ebersole, a huge underdog took all three judges cards, 29-28 (x 2) and 30-27.
Ebersole opened the fight with a very unconventional and awkward carosel kick attempt that Lytle largely blocked. Lytle countered with a hard right hand. Ebersole shot in but Lytle easily stuffed it. Then he clinched and Lytle worked over Ebersole's body. Ebersole shot in again and Lytle went for a guillotine but Ebersole reversed. Lytle then got top position as Ebersole worked his own choke attempt. Ebersole then got top position as a bleeding Lytle went after his neck. Lytle then went for a knee bar. Ebersole then landed some vicious ground and pound to end the round. Just before the round ended, Ebersole stood and spun his finger in the air in a dismissive gesture.
Lytle opened the round with a good combination. Ebersole kept showing unusual stances and attacks. Lytle landed a hard uppercut to the body. And again Lytle landed a combination followed by odd movements and leg kicks from Ebersole. Then a shot that Lytle stuffed. Lytle forced Ebersole back into the cage and landed a series of punches. Ebersole got a good take down and as Lytle fought to rise, Ebersole landed a vicious knee to Lytle's face that stunned Lytle. Then Ebersole went for a front choke with an arm in. Lytle seemed nearly out as Ebersole fought to control him. Then Ebersole got the Muay Thai plum as Lytle stood. Lytle went for a choke and got slammed hard. He ended the round landing hard shoulder slams to Lytle's face.
They exchanged a two handed slap to open the third then Ebersole threw another carosel kick. Lytle opened up with a flurry of uppercuts. Ebersole shot in, Lytle stuffed it. Lytle went for a kimura from his back. Then he gave up the arm bar. Lytle fought his way back to his feet and then went for a guillotine as Ebersole took him down again. Lytle rolled him and worked the choke from the top. Ebersole fought free. Then back to the feet. A lost mouthpiece triggered a restart and they traded from distance. Ebersole got another take down and landed more ground and pound.
The veteran Ebersole came in as a last minute replacement for the top 10 Carlos Condit. Lytle came into the fight on a four UFC fight win streak.
