It turns out that Gus Johnson might be a bigger asset to CBS than we in the blogosphere realize :
In an interview with ESPN’s Bill Simmons, Gus Johnson (NFL on CBS & MSG sports announcer) revealed to Simmons (audio starts at the 29 minute mark) that he had/has aspirations to do play-by-play for MMA events. In fact, according to Johnson, he was scheduled to be the original play-by-play guy for Showtime on the Elite XC & Sho XC broadcasts (instead of Mauro Ranallo).
Audio here. I'm really starting to get a good feeling that the show on CBS is going to go really, really well. What that means for EliteXC's long term viability is anyone's guess, but I think they are off to an auspicious beginning. That being said, I'd like to see more marketing put behind this effort.
