Since Sherdog has started ranking fighters I thought I'd do some comparison charts with their rankings against MMA Weekly and 411 Mania. Here's the heavyweights:
411 Mania | Sherdog | MMA Weekly |
Fedor Emelianenko | Fedor Emelianenko | Fedor Emelianenko |
Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera | Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira | Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira |
Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic | Gabriel Gonzaga | Mirko Cro Cop Filipovic |
Josh Barnett | Mirko Filipovic | Josh Barnett |
Gabriel Gonzaga | Josh Barnett | Randy Couture |
Randy Couture | Randy Couture | Gabriel Gonzaga |
Tim Sylvia | Tim Sylvia | Tim Sylvia |
Andrei Arlovski | Andrei Arlovski | Andrei Arlovski |
Aleksander Emelianenko | Fabricio Werdum | Fabricio Werdum |
Brandon Vera | Aleksander Emelianenko | Aleksander Emelianenko |
Everybody agrees about the top two, but I gotta differ with 411 and MMA Weekly ranking Cro Cop over Gonzo. I think it's been pretty well established how that one comes out. I think 411 has Brandon Vera pretty overranked at 10.
The UFC has 8 of these 11 fighters signed. The Emelianenko brothers and Josh Barnett being the only ones unsigned at this time. This is one division where I'd like to see the UFC have a monopoly but I bet they blow it with Fedor and continue to diss Josh. Lame.
As far as upcoming matches featuring ranked fighters, we've obviously got Couture vs Gonzaga at the end of this month for the UFC belt. Cro Cop is fighting the unranked Chiek Kongo in September at UFC 75 -- a loss could drop him from contention. Tim Sylvia will be fighting at UFC 77 -- here's hoping its against Werdum. And Arlovski and Vera will be meeting at UFC 78 in November. Cro Cop is rumored to be first in line for a title shot if he gets past Kongo. No word on what's next for Big Nog.
