Courtesy a release hot off the presses from The Fight Network:
The world's most instantly recognizable MMA referee is calling it a career in the ring and cage after 14 years. McCarthy will retire after officiating his 535th bout this Saturday night for "The Ultimate Fighter 6" Finale in Las Vegas.
"As I enter a new chapter in my life, I look forward to demonstrating my love and passion for the MMA world in my new role at The Fight Network," said McCarthy. "It's a perfect fit for me and I can't wait to get started."
He will be missed. There are other good referees in this fight game - Yves Lavigne, anyone? - but none compare in either performance or career to Big John. He has been a recognizable face and reliable arbiter in the most important and confusing of battles. When you need someone to officiate an important fight, McCarthy provided that comfort and satisfaction that you needed. You knew there wasn't going to be a poor stoppage and you knew, by and large, the rules would be fairly enforced.
He's been there almost since the beginning and he will be missed. Here's to you, Big John. Thanks for all your hard work and dedication. You have no idea how much better the sport is because of you.
