UFC on Fox 8 fight card primer: Liz Carmouche vs. Jessica Andrade

Esther Lin, MMAFighting

The Bloody Elbow team looks at all 12 fights taking place at tonight's UFC on Fox 8 in Seattle. Here, we look at the opening main card bout between Liz Carmouche and Jessica Andrade.

One of the bigger changes on the UFC on Fox 8 card was in the women's bantamweight division. Recent title challenger Liz Carmouche (8-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) was scheduled to face Miesha Tate, but Tate is now coaching season 18 of TUF opposite Ronda Rousey, and newcomer Jessica Andrade (9-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) makes her UFC debut and gets a main card slot.

Come fight night, this will be the 5th women's MMA fight in UFC history. Carmouche took part in the historic first in the UFC 157 main event, but now she needs her first UFC win. Andrade is just 21 years old and is facing a big jump in competition. The UFC on Fox main card airs live from Seattle at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT, with prelims on FX starting from 5 PM ET/2 PM PT.

How do these two stack up?

Carmouche: 29 years old | 5'6" | 66" reach
Andrade: 21 years old | 5'3" | Unknown reach

What have these two done recently?

Carmouche: L - Ronda Rousey (SUB) | W - Kaitlin Young (SUB) | W - Ashleigh Curry (TKO)
Andrade: W - Milana Dudieva (SUB) | W - Luciana Pereira (SUB) | L - Jennifer Maia (UD)

How did these two get here?

Carmouche's career got off to a great start, with 6 wins in 6 fights and an upcoming title fight against Marloes Coenen in Strikeforce. Coenen submitted Carmouche in the 4th round to defend her women's welterweight (as it was called at the time) title. Liz dropped her next fight to former SF champion Sarah Kaufman and closed out 2011 without a win. After two wins in Invicta she was chosen to fight Ronda Rousey in the main event of UFC 157 for the first ever women's MMA bout in the organization. Carmouche had a neck crank on Rousey early on, but once Rousey escaped it was all Rousey up until the trademark armbar.

Andrade has finished all nine of her wins, with a nice mixture of KO/TKOs (4) and submissions (5). If there's anything consistent with her submission wins it's that 4 of them have come by guillotine choke. With the women's MMA scene, particularly at bantamweight, still developing, not much is known about the Brazilian beyond the odd stray video of her matches. The biggest notable name she's fought is Jennifer Maia, who beat her by unanimous decision. This is surely a huge opportunity for her to join the UFC and be thrust onto the national spotlight against a recent PPV headliner.

Why should you care?

Carmouche is heavily favored to win, and this is admittedly not considered one of the "must see" fights on the card, but it would be nice to see Andrade put in a good showing to give the women's 135 lbs division more depth.
