UFC On Fox 6 results recap: Prelims part 1

The first three fights of Saturday's event brought a lot of exciting action. Both the Heavyweight and Middleweight fights saw impressive finished from Shawn Jordan and Rafael Natal respectively.

UFC ON Fox 6 took place Saturday January 26 in the United Center in Chicago, IL. The event was headlined with a flyweight championship tilt between Demetrious Johnson and John Dodson. Before that the UFC broadcast the preliminary bouts on Facebook and FX Network.

Shawn Jordan (14-4) vs. Mike Russow (15-3, 1 NC)

The only Heavyweight fight of the evening was the second match on the FX prelims. Russow dominated the opening round with superior striking and trying to wear Jordan down in the clinch. The second round turned the tide when Jordan's cardio proved better and he got the advantage on Russow on the ground. An eye poke may have also effected Russow. But, in the end, Jordan stopped Russow with strikes.

Jordan improved to 2-1 in the UFC with the TKO victory. It also helped him get passed the poor performance against Cheick Kongo from UFC 149. After an impressive 4 fight win streak to start his UFC career, Russow has now dropped his last two fights. The thinness of the HW division should preserve his spot.

Rafael Natal (15-4-1) vs. Sean Spencer (9-2)

It took him a while to hit his stride, but Natal proved to be a step ahead of Spencer in their Middleweight bout. The two traded relatively evenly on the feet for most of the first round before Natal hit a late takedown that saw him finishing the round in mount. Noting Spencer's weakness Natal punished him from top position throughout the second and got the arm triangle finish in the final round.

The win improved Natal's UFC record to a respectable 3-2-1. Sean Spencer lost his UFC debut, but considering he took the fight on short notice and undersized, he should get another chance. Hopefully he'll take the opportunity to cut to 170 lbs.

David Mitchell (12-2) vs. Simeon Thoresen (17-4-1)

This Welterweight fight opened up the UFC On Fox 6 card on Facebook. For the first round the two submission grapplers battled on the feet. That round was mostly even, but Mitchell took the lead in the second with a knockdown and followed up with an attack on the ground. The final round again went back and forth on the feet and on the mat. After the bell the judges scored the fight unanimously 30-27 for Mitchell.

Prior to this Mitchell had been out for almost a year and a half and was coming off a two-fight losing streak. A win over Thoresen won't move him far up the rankings, but will hold his spot on the UFC roster. Thoresen dropped to 1-2 in the UFC, with the influx of Strikeforce fighters it's hard to see him not getting cut after this loss.
