On the FX prelims for UFC On Fox 5, Lightweight Abel Trujillo picked up a TKO victory over Marcus LeVesseur. This was Trujillo's debut in the UFC. He has a career record of 10-4. The loss dropped LeVesseur (22-7) down to 1-2 in the UFC.
Early in the first round it looked like this fight would be a snoozer. LeVesseur clinched up with Trujillo quickly and put his back against the fence. Marcus struggled for a takedown while eating some shots from Trujillo. Then Abel decided enough was enough. Comfortable with his takedown defense, he started really opening up with his strikes. At the end of the round LeVesseur went to clinch again and ate a big knee from Abel for his trouble. The end seemed inevitable going into the second and it didn't take long for Abel to have Marcus cowering against the fence while taking vicious knees to the body.
What was the high point of the fight?
The fight took a turn in Trujillo's favor about halfway through the first round. You can almost see the change on his face when he decided to punish LeVesseur for stalling and start wailing on him.
Where do they go from here?
If there's something the UFC loves to see from a debuting fighter, it's going to be a violent victory over a stalling opponent and that's exactly what Abel Trujillo did. This was an impressive victory for him and the UFC will be excited to book him again.
As bright as the future looks for Trujillo's UFC hopes, it looks equally bleak for Marcus LeVesseur. The UFC may feel like they owe him one more for stepping up on short notice after Tim Means was injured while getting ready to weigh in, but I don't think that will be enough. His lone UFC win was an abysmal fight against Carlo Prater and if he'd had his way this fight wouldn't have been any different.
Watch it now, later, or never?
Watch it now. You want to see the knees to the body that finished off LeVesseur.
