Bloody Elbow presents their UFC on Fox 5 fight card primer, previewing all the action at UFC on Fox 5 this Saturday. Here, we look at Mike Swick vs. Matt Brown.
UFC on Fox 5 opens with a battle of TUF veterans as Mike Swick (15-4 MMA; 10-3 UFC) faces Matt Brown (15-11 MMA; 8-5 UFC). This is a Welterweight fight that kicks off the four fight Fox main card. UFC on Fox 5 airs this Saturday night, December 8 at 8:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 p.m. PT.
While it doesn't have the same appeal as the rest of the main card, this is a solid opener. Both men are tough veterans with strong UFC careers. They also tend to deliver quality fights, as evidenced by the last time Swick opened a Fox card. Welterweight is so busy right now that the winner here will remain way outside the title picture, but I suspect these two will put on a fun fight.
How do these two stack up?
Swick: 33 years old | 6'1" | 77" reach
Brown: 31 years old | 6'0" | 76" reach
What have these two done recently?
Swick: W - DaMarques Johnson (KO) | L - Paulo Thiago (Sub) | L - Dan Hardy (UD)
Brown: W - Luis Ramos (TKO) | W - Stephen Thompson (UD) | W - Chris Cope (TKO)
How did these two get here?
Mike "Quick" Swick is a veteran of season 1 of The Ultimate Fighter - one of the few from that season still standing and moderately relevant. He started his UFC career on a very strong run, coming close to title contention on two separate occasions before losing to Yushin Okami and Dan Hardy. Injuries kept Swick on the shelf for over two years, but he made a tremendous return at the last Fox show, scoring a huge KO win. This is his second fight back since the long layoff.
"The Immortal" Matt Brown came to the UFC via season 7 of TUF, where he developed a reputation as a seriously tough guy. That reputation has never really translated to the Octagon, where he has an inconsistent 8-5 record. He's currently on a 3 fight win streak, and has looked good in those wins, though is facing a tough challenge here. Fun fact: Matt Brown has never won 4 fights in a row in his career, ever.
Why should you care?
Swick will go for the big early finish, either by KO or submission. If he gets it, it will make for a fun highlight moment. If not, it should still be a decent battle.
