In the second main card bout of UFC on Fox 5, Canadian welterweight Rory MacDonald picked up a dominating unanimous decision win over former welterweight and lightweight champion B.J. Penn. MacDonald controlled most of the fight, lighting up BJ with big strikes and picking up some takedowns for good measure. It seemed that he was close to finishing in the second round, but it ended up going to the final horn. The scores were 30-26, 30-27, and 30-26.
MacDonald (14-1, 5-1 UFC) picked up his fourth straight victory and after the fight he called out the only man to defeat him, Carlos Condit. Penn (16-9-2, 12-8-2 UFC) is just 1-4-1 in his last six bouts and could be at the end of his career after that defeat.
What was the high point of the fight?
There was a portion of the second round where MacDonald absolutely battered Penn against the cage, with Penn just covering up and taking it. MacDonald also showboated a bit in the third, which drew the ire of the crowd.
Where do they go from here?
MacDonald will probably go on to face Condit. If not, there are a bunch of options for him at the top of the welterweight division.
Penn really should either retire, or go back to lightweight. Retirement is the more likely option though, since he was already semi-retired before he came back to fight Rory.
Watch now, later, or never?
Now. While the bout was very one-sided, there was enough action to make a worthwhile watch.
