In the opening fight of the UFC 167 main card, Flyweight Ali Bagautinov (11-2) took a unanimous decision (29-28 x 2, 30-27) victory over Tim Elliott (10-3-1). Bagautinov improved to 2-0 in the UFC. Elliott dropped to .500 at 2-2 in the Octagon.
Elliott pressured Bagautinov from the start of the fight. He took the center of the Octagon and tried to pressure Ali, but wasn't able to land as effectively as his opponent. Bagautinov landed the bigger strikes through the third round affair. Elliott had a chance to finish in the second and got a slam, but rightfully took the decision.
What was the high point of the fight?
It was a solid fight, but not a lot of huge moments. The slam at the end of the third was a lot of fun though.
Where do they go from here?
Flyweight stands as one of the very thinnest divisions in the UFC. Elliot won't be a big enough win for Bagautinov to get a title shot, but he's likely get a jump in competition next.
Elliot has fallen to 2-2, but his only other loss is to John Dodson who's on his way to contendership. He's not in danger of losing his spot on the UFC roster and you'll see him get a chance to fight again relatively soon.
Watch it now, later, or never?
It's a good fight and, if you're interested in the FLW division you'll want to watch it. But there were bigger fights last night and you'll want to see those first. Put this on the back burner for now.
