UFC 163 fight card primer: Ednaldo Oliveira vs. Francimar Barroso

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

Check out a primer for the UFC 163 light heavyweight fight between Ednaldo Oliveira and Fracimar Barroso. The bout will take place on the Facebook-streamed portion of the card.

In the second fight on the Facebook-streamed portion of UFC 163, Ednaldo Oliveira (13-1-1, 1 NC, 0-1 UFC) and Francimar Barroso (15-3, 0-0 UFC) will meet in a light heavyweight contest. Neither man is currently ranked in the official UFC rankings, which shouldn't come as a surprise. The Facebook portion of UFC 163 kicks off at 6:30pm ET/3:30pm PT.

Oliveira is dropping down to light heavyweight for the first time. This is his third attempt at a fight, as he was forced out of his other two previous 205 lb. bookings due to injury. Barroso is a late replacement for Robert Drysdale, who was forced out with lingering issues from staph infection.

How do these two stack up?

Oliveira: 29 years old | 6'7" | 81.5" reach
Barroso: 33 years old | 6'1" | 75" reach

What have these two done recently?

Oliveira: L - Gabriel Gonzaga (SUB) | W - Nalzinho Novaes (KO) | W - Jair Goncalves (TKO)
Barroso: W - Simao Silva (SUB) | W - Cristiano Souza (TKO) | W - Falco Neto Lopes (SUB)

How did these two get here?

Ednaldo Oliveira unsurprisingly started out his career in Brazil as a heavyweight, compiling a 13-0-1 (1 NC) record before getting signed by the UFC. He was supposed to debut against Rob Broughton, but ended up getting stuck with a much tougher opponent, Gabriel Gonzaga, after Broughton pulled out. Oliveira's undefeated record disappeared when he was submitted by GG. He decided to drop to light heavyweight after that. After two false starts due to injury, he'll finally make his 205 debut on this card.

SBN coverage of UFC 163: Aldo vs. Jung

Fracimar "Bodao" Barroso is another Brazilian fighter that had a good run before being picked up by the UFC. He has finished 14 of his 15 wins, 11 of them in the first round. He was the Shooto Brazil light heavyweight champion, and is a training partner of UFC 163 headliner Jose Aldo. He likes to brawl, but has a savvy submission game as well.

Why should you care?

Of all the early fights, this one has the potential to be the most explosive. I expect some standnbang, and you should too.
