UFC 161 results recap: Jake Shields vs. Tyron Woodley

As is his wont, Shields picked up a split decision over Woodley in a boring and lackluster fight.

In the UFC 161 FX prelims feature bout, Jake Shields (28-6-1, 1 NC) picked up a split decision win over Tyron Woodley (11-2). Shields was making his return to Welterweight after a single 185 lb. fight last summer. He's now 3-2, 1 NC in the UFC. Woodley suffered only the second loss of his career and his first as a UFC fighter. The loss puts him at 1-1 with the promotion.

From bell to bell, this was a lackluster fight. Shields struggled throughout the bout to secure a takedown and never really succeeded. Despite being able to stay off his back, Woodley never looked comfortable and barely landed any of the few strikes he threw. So, Shields got the nod through his aggression (if you want to call it that) and ineffective striking.

What was the high point of the fight?

The final bell.

Where do they go from here?

Regardless of fan disdain for his style, Shields has still only lost to the very top of the division. He deserves another top 10 opponent after this one and I'd like to see him BJJ master Demian Maia after Maia fights Josh Koscheck at UFC 163.

This was a tough loss for Woodley as he was riding a big wave after KOing Jay Heiron in his UFC debut. It violates Joe Silva's traditional winner vs. winner, loser vs loser rule, but I'd like to see him against Matt Brown next.

Watch it now, never, or later?

Never. It was bad. Very bad.
