UFC 161 fight card primer: Mitch Clarke vs. John Maguire

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

Bloody Elbow presents their UFC 161 fight card primer, previewing all the action at UFC 161: Evans vs. Henderson. Here, we look at Mitch Clarke vs. John Maguire.

The 2nd fight on the UFC 161 lineup sees Canadian lightweight Mitch Clarke (9-2 MMA, 0-2 UFC) face England's John Maguire (18-5 MMA, 2-2 UFC). It's a drop in weight for Maguire, who had competed as high as middleweight in and fought 4 times as a welterweight in the UFC.

Both men are on two fight skids, but Clarke's situation is much more critical due to his lack of a UFC win. The UFC 161 preliminary card starts on Facebook at 7 PM ET/4 PM PT and continues on FX at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT.

How do these two stack up?

Clarke: 27 years old | 5'10" | 73" reach
Maguire: 30 years old | 5'9" | 70" reach

What have these two done recently?

Clarke: L - Anton Kuivanen (SD) | L - John Cholish (TKO) | W - Eddie Rincon (UD)
Maguire: L - Matt Riddle (UD) | L - John Hathaway (UD) | W - DaMarques Johnson (SUB)

How did these two get here?

Clarke made his UFC debut in late 2011 after compiling a 9-0 record in Canadian regional promotions. He fought John Cholish at UFC 140, losing in the 2nd round by TKO after giving up his back in a scramble on the ground. His next fight at UFC 149 in Calgary saw him lose a split decision to Anton Kuivanen. There isn't much else to say regarding Clarke's future in the UFC other than he simply has to come up with an upset victory this evening.

Maguire recovered from an early knockdown to defeat Justin Edward in his UFC debut at UFC 138 in Birmingham. The Englishman then notched his first stoppage win in the organization by submitting DaMarques Johnson in Sweden last April. Maguire, already undersized at welterweight, was easily controlled by John Hathaway at UFC on Fuel 5, ending his early success. A November loss to Matt Riddle saw him end his run at welterweight and move to lightweight.

Why should you care?

Clarke is the more desperate of the two fighters as he doesn't have a UFC win, and Maguire's grappling will be a difficult test for him to pass.
