UFC 156 results recap: Demian Maia vs. Jon Fitch

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

A full results recap of the UFC 156 welterweight bout between Demian Maia and Jon Fitch. Maia picked up his third win in a row at welterweight by taking a unanimous decision.

In the second main card bout of UFC 156, surging welterweight Demian Maia completely dominated Jon Fitch to take a unanimous decision victory. Maia came out and immediately got a takedown on the Purdue wrestler, which was a bit surprising. He quickly advanced to back mount and looked for a sub, but couldn't get it. The second round was basically a carbon copy of the first after some standup for 30 seconds or so.

Maia got Fitch down quickly in the third as well, but Fitch had a glimmer of hope when he used a D'Arce choke to get on top. It wasn't to be though, since Maia was able to get up and eventually get back on top. All three judges had it 30-27, but it was one of the widest 30-27's you'll see in the UFC.

What was the high point of the fight?

Maia's initial takedown. It was shocking how good his wrestling was, and getting Fitch to the ground that easily was pretty unexpected.

Where do they go from here?

Maia has now won three fights in a row at welterweight, and the win over Fitch moved him well into the top 10. Other than Johny Hendricks, he's the the guy with the most momentum at 170 at the moment. I think he should face the winner of the Rory MacDonald vs. Carlos Condit rematch at UFC 158.

Fitch is now 1-2-1 in his last four, and was completely outclassed by Maia in his favorite environment - the grappling game. He's still a tough out for just about any welterweight though, and a solid next bout would be a matchup with Nick Diaz, assuming Diaz comes up short against Georges St. Pierre at UFC 158.

Watch now, later, or never?

I would say now because I loved the fight from a technical aspect. But many found the fight boring and would lean towards later, or even never. If you appreciate ground fighting though, check it out.
