In a Middleweight fight at UFC 155, former top contender Yushin Okami defeated Alan Belcher via unanimous decision. Okami took the fight 30-27, 30-27, 29-28. This brings his record up to 28-7 overall. Belcher loses his first fight since his 2011 return, and is now 18-7.
The story of this fight was Okami's grinding wrestling. The fight repeatedly ended up on the ground, where Okami used his strength to wear down Belcher. Belcher tried to escape, but couldn't mount enough offense. Belcher's biggest offense came in the form of multiple ill advised guillotine attempts. None worked, and every one put Okami in top position, allowing him to control his way to the win.
What was the high spot of this fight?
It was a pretty basic grinding fight with nothing really standing out outside of a bit of early theatrics from Belcher.
Where do these guys go from here?
Okami is the clear Middleweight gatekeeper, and he kept the gate here perfectly. Given how things are currently playing out in the division, I think he makes a good test for fellow UFC 155 victor Costa Philippou next.
Alan Belcher was talking title shot, but those always seemed kind of like big dreams, and with this loss, those dreams are toast. Sadly, I'm not sure how much more he has to offer the UFC at this point, though he does make a good veteran for less experienced fighters to face. Nick Ring perhaps?
Watch it now, later, or never?
Never. It was pretty dull to be honest.
