Bloody Elbow takes a look at UFC 155 results as we recap Tim Boetsch vs. Costa Philippou.
In another Middleweight fight at UFC 155, Costa Philippou scored something of an upset win, defeating Tim Boetsch. Philippou earned a TKO victory, stopping Boetsch with ground and pound strikes at 2:11 of round 3. This is Boetsch's first loss at Middleweight, while Philippou moves up to 12-2 and extends his current winning streak to 5 in a row.
Boetsch looked good in round 1, but got tagged late in the round. He also suffered a number of setbacks as he broke his hand in round 1, suffered a cut from a headbutt, and took an eye poke. Philippou took full advantage of the opportunity and pressured Boetsch throughout rounds 2 and 3, eventually getting the stoppage. Not a great night for Boetsch, who is also coming off his awkward UFC 149 fight with Hector Lombard.
What was the high spot of this fight?
When Philippou uses his boxing well, it's fun to watch, and he caught Boetsch with some nice shots late in round 1. Those shots were ultimately what turned the tide in his favor.
Where do these guys go from here?
This is a big win for Philippou that suddenly puts him in title contention. I still think he needs 1 or 2 big fights to make a real run, but his next opponent should be another high profile one. Yushin Okami sounds just right.
Boetsch is back to the drawing board here with his title run derailed. Hard to say how much time he'll need off now due to his hand, but if the timelines work out, I would love to see him against Mark Munoz next time.
Watch it now, later, or never?
Later. It's a bit of a weird fight, but a good performance from Costa that pushes him into the upper ranks at 185.
