Welterweights Matt Riddle and John Maguire finished off the Facebook prelims for UFC 154.
Capping off the Facebook portion of UFC 154, Matt Riddle took a unanimous decision over John Maguire in their Welterweight tilt. Riddle extended his UFC record to 7-3, 1 NC. After being outworked by Riddle, Maguire drops to 2-2 in the UFC (18-5 overall).
Despite the grappling strength of both fighters, most of this match was contested on the feet. As usual, Riddle was almost hilariously inaccurate with his striking, but his pace allowed him to take rounds 1 and 3 on two judges scorecards and all three rounds on the other card. Maguire did get a couple chances to showcase his Gypsy Jiu Jitsu. In round 2, Riddle was to cautious to be caught by Maguire and they were eventually stood up. Then late in the 3rd, Maguire grabbed a guillotine but didn't have time to finish.
What was the high point of the fight?
Riddle's spinning kick after Maguire caught his leg. After John grabbed a leg kick, Riddle spun around with his foot still in Maguire's hand as he kicked him in the face.
Where do they go from here?
We didn't see anything new here from Matt Riddle. His striking was typically sloppy and he refused to implement his wrestling game throughout the fight. It was good to see him get a win after a positive drug test for marijuana turned his last fight to a no contest, but he'll continue to battle the lower tier of the 170 lb. division.
Back to the drawing board for John Maguire after this fight. Since he started off strong with back-to-back wins in the promotion, I expect the UFC to give him one more chance before cutting him.
Watch it now, later, or never?
Watch it later. it wasn't a great fight by any means, but Riddle's crazy kick makes it worth checking out.
