Second up at UFC 154, Ivan Menjivar did his best to separate Azamat Gashimov from his left arm.
In the second contest of UFC 154, Bantamweight Ivan Menjivar submitted Azamat Gashimov halfway through the first round. The arm breaking victory was Menjivar's recovery after a loss to Mike Easton at UFC 148. His UFC record is now 4-1 (25-9 overall). The fight was Gashimov's first as a UFC fighter and dropped his career record to 7-2.
Azamat got the takedown early, but found himself defending an armbar when it hit the ground. Gashimov was able to escape and ate an upkick from Menjivar in the process. Back on the mat, Gashimov landed some good punches, but once again found himself defending Ivan's armbar attempt. He tried to slam out, Menjivar swung out from under him and bellied down on the armbar to get the tap.
What was the high point of the fight?
Without a doubt, the armbar. Incredibly impressive display of technique from Menjivar to get the win.
Where do they go from here?
A great win for the seasoned veteran Menjivar, but a submission over the unknown Gashimov probably won't do much to bump him up the Bantamweight ranks. For his next fight, he'll need to face someone in the top 25. A match with Takey Mizugaki would show which fighter is ready to start moving up the ladder.
A disappointing debut for the Russian Azamat Gashimov, especially to suffer injury in the process. It's hard to say if he'll get another shot after being finished quickly in his first UFC fight. If they do give him a second chance, he'll need a win to stay with the company.
