Bloody Elbow presents their UFC 154 fight card primer, previewing all the action at UFC 154: St. Pierre vs. Condit. Here, we look at Martin Kampmann vs. Johny Hendricks.
The co-main event at UFC 154: St. Pierre vs. Condit is definitely a fight to watch. Martin Kampmann (20-5 MMA; 11-4 UFC) takes on Johny Hendricks (13-1 MMA; 8-1 UFC) in this Welterweight #1 contenders fight. The UFC 154 PPV airs this Saturday night, November 17, with the main card beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET / 7:00 p.m. PT.
The big story here is that #1 contender status, as the winner is next in line for the GSP vs. Condit winner. Of course, that kind of "#1 contender" status doesn't always mean you'll actually get a title shot. If GSP wins and the Silva vs. St. Pierre superfight takes place, it will mean another huge gap where the UFC Welterweight title is not defended. Would the winner here then sit on the shelf and wait? History says it's a strong possibility, but I'd hate to see either of these guys out for a year waiting.
How do these two stack up?
Kampmann: 30 years old | 6'0" | 72" reach
Hendricks: 29 years old | 5'9" | 69" reach
What have these two done recently?
How did these two get here?
Martin "The Hitman" Kampmann seemed destined to be the Welterweight gatekeeper until his current very impressive 3 fight win streak. Take a look at those recent wins - all contenders who lost to Kampmann. Prior to those wins, he had two razor close decision losses to Jake Shields and Diego Sanchez, both fights where many argue Kampmann should have won. He also holds a win over Carlos Condit. He's proven himself to be a contender, and seems unable to lose right now. This is his chance to finally break free from the gatekeeper status.
Johny Hendricks is an accomplished wrestler with strong punching power who was toiling on UFC undercards for some time. He had a shot on the main card at UFC 141 against Jon Fitch, and he made the most of it, stunningly KOing Fitch in just 12 seconds. He's had one fight since - a tight decision win over Josh Koscheck. It's been nearly a year since that Fitch KO, and Hendricks's momentum has cooled considerably in that time. He'll try to crete a new highlight reel moment against Kampmann.
Why should you care?
Because Martin Kampmann makes fights awesome, period. The #1 contender status is just the cherry on top.
