UFC 154 fight card primer: Cyrille Diabate vs. Chad Griggs

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

The Bloody Elbow team gives you a brief preview of all the night's action from UFC 154 in Montreal, Quebec, including this light-heavyweight showdown between Cyrille Diabate and Chad Griggs.

The 3rd of 4 preliminary card fights airing on FX sees Cyrille Diabate (18-8-1 MMA, 3-2 UFC) take on Chad Griggs (11-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) in the light-heavyweight division. This is Griggs' 1st fight at 205 lbs, while Diabate looks to finally win consecutive fights in the UFC.

Originally on the main card, this fight was bumped to the prelims for Costa Philippou vs. Nick Ring, which is certainly more important than Diabate vs. Griggs. You can watch this plus the other three fights on FX at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT before the live PPV starts at 10 PM ET/7 PM PT.

How do these two stack up?

Diabate: 39 years old | 6'6" | 81" reach
Griggs: 34 years old | 6'1" | 73 " reach

What have these two done recently?

Diabate: W - Tom DeBlass (MD) | L - Anthony Perosh (SUB) | W - Steve Cantwell (UD)
Griggs: L - Travis Browne (SUB) | W - Valentijn Overeem (SUB) | W - Gian Villante (TKO)

How did these two get here?

Diabate is a true veteran of combat sports, fighting all around the world including a one-off in PRIDE against Mauricio Rua. "The Snake" also has an extensive kickboxing and Muay Thai background, competing in kickboxing up until 2005. His UFC debut was a come-from-behind KO against Luiz Arthur Cane, but he's alternated wins with losses since then. He's earned decision wins over Steve Cantwell and Tom DeBlass while suffering rear-naked choke losses to Anthony Perosh and Alexander Gustafsson.

Griggs became a near cult figure in the MMA world when he became the first man to defeat Bobby Lashley back in 2010 under the Strikeforce banner. He went on to win two more fights in Strikeforce, including a stoppage win over Overeem ... Valentijn that is. Griggs' UFC debut was not remotely competitive, with Travis Browne easily dispatching him in just over two minutes. He tried to make his 205 lbs debut in August against Phil Davis, but an injury forced him out. Griggs was a replacement for Fabio Maldonado, who went on to feature on UFC 153.

Why should you care?

It's not a relevant fight in the context of the title picture, but it should be a fun one, as is the case for all of the FX prelim fights.
