Jim Ross discusses the marketing of Shane Carwin vs. Junior dos Santos at UFC 131: "Yes...Shane Carwin is somewhat 'dry' on the personality front or so many feel but w/ Paul Heyman doing some producing for Spike TV for their countdown show, Heyman will do his usual good job of hiding Carwin's weaknesses, underscoring Shane's strengths, and capturing a few marketable sound bytes by a monster who has only lost one MMA fight and is one victory away from another, big money title fight. BTW...Dos Santos isn't exactly a sound byte machine either but it only takes a few key, honest and pointed remarks to adequately sell a fight. UFC fighters just need to be somewhat embellished TV versions of their true self and provide the consumer with viable and legit reasons to buy an event. No one is suggesting that they go hyperbole and over the top ala some pro wrestling stars back in the day or even the great Muhammad Ali who got his shtick from wrestling but had a natural, charismatic delivery that did not feel forced to me. Jim Ross talks UFC Primetime and TUF 13: "Watched the GSP-Jake Shields 30 minute UFC Prime time special Thursday night. It was OK but not a compelling show largely in part to both fighters being somewhat low key and remaining professional. I'm going to buy the PPV nonetheless from Toronto but the TV special, while having good production values and being well edited, felt sort of like a nice bowl of oatmeal with nothing on it." "The TUF TV rating has been disappointing to me. TUF is largely about the cast and no one individual on the cast stands out to me as of yet."

Jim Ross gives his prediction for Shane Carwin vs. Brock Lesnar: "I'm a Lesnar guy but I will guarantee you that this will be a war and will be Lesnar's toughest test to date in MMA. Shane Carwin has many of the same physical tendencies and comparable athletic background that Brock possesses but until someone gets it done, I'm going with Lesnar. The mental makeup of Brock Lesnar is something to behold and one has to fully understand the man to know just how much he hates/detests losing. The former WWE and NCAA champion will train like a madman in preparation for this July 3 confrontation on PPV in Vegas." "For the record, I've known many 'driven,' world class athletes in my career but none more so than Brock Lesnar." Jim Ross talks Strikeforce on CBS: The actions of many involved in the post game fiasco cannot be tolerated and penalties of significance should be doled out. The number of corner men and/or the fighter's entourage allowed at cage side needs to be addressed and lessened. Why was Miller even allowed to enter the cage in the first place. ...I have no issue with Mayhem Miller making a grandiose challenge but I do feel how it was handled by all involved was bush league and not a good thing for MMA in general. Where was the Fedor personality profile or highlight package? Isn't Fedor allegedly the baddest of the bad and if so why was his persona not enhanced on CBS? Are there issues with Fedor's 'people' or was this an oversight that saw Strikeforce's biggest, MMA, mainstream star ignored? Jim Ross talks UFC 112: "UFC in Abu Dhabi was a stinker. Too bad, too. Only one opportunity to make a first impression in a new market. Not sure what's up with Anderson Silva but it sure sounds like it's attitudinal and ego driven. Fighters. wrestlers, ball players, etc have a responsibility to always give the fans their monies worth and Silva hasn't done that too many times lately. Helluva talented guy but he appears to becoming a 'head case' and I assure you that after being in pro wrestling for 36 years I know a 'head case' when I see one. I would not have confidence that Anderson Silva can be 'the guy' and headline PPV events until he regains the trust and the confidence of UFC/MMA fans." "B.J. Penn losing surprised me as he is one of my favorites but it was obviously a close fight and I've said before that MMA judging is often times some what schizophrenic. Penn will be back and this loss doesn't devalue him remotely close to what Silva's win did for "the Spider."" HT: jrsbarbq.com UFC 112: Invincible coverage

Jim Ross talks Dana White: "UFC President Dana White was on the money when he said that at times that his role in UFC was that of a "glorified baby sitter." Oh, how I can relate to that analogy from my days of yesteryear. Dana does a magnificent job representing UFC publicly, conveys their attitudinal personality and has become a helluva sound byte."
